2024 Tony winner Jonathan Groff has already set his return to Broadway, in a jukebox biomusical centered on the life and music of “Beyond the Sea” singer Bobby Darin. Titled Just in Time, the new musical will make its world premiere on the Main Stem this season, with previews beginning March 28, 2025, ahead of an official opening April 23 at the Circle in the Square Theatre.

Tony winner will be at the helm of the immersive staging that will see the in-the-round theatre transformed into an intimate nightclub with a live, onstage big band. Groff will be joined by a cast of 16 (to be announced), tracking Darin’s life story and performing his greatest hits. Repost

Lymon was the leader of the groundbreaking first all-teen hit rock ‘n’ roll band the Teenagers with chart topping tunes from the 1950’s and 1960’s and an of-the-moment sound mashing up doo-wop and rock ‘n’ roll to their racially integrated lineup (Frankie, Jimmy Merchant and Sherman Garnes were Black, Joe Negroni and Herman Santiago were Puerto Rican). Ramón “Mongo” Santamaría Rodríguez was a Cuban percussionist and bandleader who spent most of his career in the United States. Primarily a conga drummer, Santamaría was a leading figure in the pachanga and boogaloo dance crazes of the 1960s. Santamaria’s “Green Onions” here (a cover of the iconic Booker T standard) is a classic cut that showcases the legendary Cuban percussionist’s mastery on the drums. First released in 1969 the single hears a funking reissue here that once more shines a blinding light on Santamaria’s deft ability to blend originally American compositions with Latin rhythms and soul-jazz structures.

One of the most prolific jazzmen of all time, we are remembering the late great alto saxophonist Cannonball Adderley who was born this week in 1928. Know for his emphatic blues harmonies and full, bright tone, Adderly’s exuberant approach made him made him one of the most successful proponents of soul-jazz.
