Hat Rabbit Studio provides a full range of stagecraft services, from page to stage, including fabrication, installation, training and workshopping, troubleshooting, and refurbishments of props, puppets, and costumes. Hat Rabbit Studio was founded in 2013 by husband and wife Aaron Hartnett and Robyn Coffey, who met while working as artisans in the studio of world-renowned, Emmy Award-winning puppet

designer Michael Curry in Portland, Oregon. Aaron graduated from Lewis and Clark College in Portland in 2002 with a Bachelor's degree in foreign languages and a minor in theater. With Michael Curry Design, he traveled Asia, Europe, the Middle East, and the United States, installing new shows, training performers, and working with acclaimed producers, directors, and choreographers. Robyn received her Bachelor's degree in fashion design from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2007. She spent several seasons in New York City working under six-time Tony Award-winning Broadway costume designer and American Theater Wing President William Ivey Long before accepting a position in the soft goods department at Michael Curry Design.

Thank you again to everyone who has helped us get home. We’re three-quarters of the way to our goal! Tomorrow we will be drawing the name of a donor at random to receive a personalized piece of artwork made by 8yo Jericho!

We are still seeking donations to help with Aaron and Jericho’s epic cross-country road trip. Our family is leaving NYC on June 28 and the guys plan on taking about a week for the drive. That’s 7 campgrounds or hotel rooms, 21 meals, and lots of tanks of gas.

We are so, so, grateful for the help you’ve already provided. If you are unable to donate, please spread the word. THANK YOU.

Aaron, Robyn, Jericho, and Wilder have reached our goal of 10 years in … Robyn Coffey Hartnett needs your support for Help bring the Hartnetts home to Oregon!

For those of you who don’t know, Aaron and the boys and I are moving home to Oregon July 1. We’re all psyched about this next chapter in our lives, and very eager to be closer to family!

That said, we would be grateful for any help to get us there. The pandemic’s awful effect on our industry wiped out our livelihood and savings.

If you can’t donate, we totally get it! Please feel free to pass the word.

Thanks y’all!

There’s a bit about us in this article. The Costume Industry Coalition is still accepting donations!

A group of Broadway businesses and arts organizations have banded together to ensure the theater ecosystem makes it through the shutdown. The current aim of the group is a state proposal for direct relief to the arts sector. While Broadway has been offered federal relief through the Save Our Stages....

The Costume Industry Coalition (CIC) is honored to have the support of one of the theatre industry’s greatest champions: Secretary Hillary Rodham Clinton!

Hillary Clinton has always been a supporter of the Arts. In a recent New York Times virtual panel, she was bemoaning the fact that she misses live theatre. She also tweeted her support for CIC partner Be An , the grassroots organization lobbying Congress for comprehensive arts relief. That prompted the CIC to reach out to Secretary Clinton, and revisit the indelible connection she has to our Members.

Having Secretary Clinton’s support has motivated the CIC Members to continue advocating for our collective survival. With your contributions, both through donations and sharing our story, we will ensure CIC Members--and the artisans they employ--can survive this crisis and continue to bring magic to stages and screens for years to come. The CIC is proud to share that WYNC is helping to spread the word about the difficulties everyone in our industry is facing. Please wish us luck as prepare to yet again this week. Fingers crossed that 2021 will bring back luck, joy, prosperity, and live theater!

We started the Costume Industry Coalition in June to advocate for the survival of the custom costume community during this crisis. The CIC’s 55 Members employ over 500 costume artisans and experts; our goal is to make sure they all have an artistic home to which to return when this is all over.

We have been overwhelmed by the support we have received from so many, not only in the form of donations, but in the constant encouragement and amplification of our cause. We are being recognized not only as a valuable part of the entertainment industry, but as a unique ecosystem unlike any other.

One of our greatest supporters has been Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS, one of the nation’s leading industry-based HIV/AIDS fundraising and grant-making organizations. From the beginning of the pandemic, they have mobilized and raised millions of dollars to help thousands in the entertainment industry—including the CIC. We are proud to call them a partner, and encourage you to support them in any way you can.

Throughout 2021, the CIC will continue our fight for survival, while continuing to pull back the curtain on the awe-inspiring talent and craftsmanship that make up the custom costume industry. From concept to care, we are the costume experts involved in every aspect of bringing costumes to the stage, screen, and beyond. We encourage you to invite your friends and family to stand in support of the CIC and our incredible community in any way they can.

is a YouTube star with nearly a million subscribers and her channel features the reconstruction and interpretation of historical dress. She has made an incredible video documenting the creation of our pattern and her garment. As she says, “I’m teaming up with Hamilton Costume Designer Paul Tazewell and the Broadway costume industry as they help us (yes—us!) reconstruct an actual Hamilton spencer jacket (that I 10000% intend to wear EVERYWHERE now). We’re spilling the tea on what it takes to bring a costume from design to stage: there will be SEWING. There will be GIVEAWAYS. There will be PATTERNS. I am HYYYYYPED, friends."

The majority of the entertainment industry remains closed. Federal relief has stalled. The (CIC)’s Members are without sustainable income for the foreseeable future, as orders have been cancelled or delayed indefinitely. Our businesses and the future of is in jeopardy.

Our posts is only a small example of the work CIC Members have produced these last few years. Virtual Entertainment has been a constant companion as we all navigate 2020 and we’re proud to have contributed our part to the arts economy. The lack of arts relief is crippling artists across the nation, which is why the was formed, to ensure artists in the NY and surrounding NY area are still here when we get back to “normal”. If you enjoyed and partook of virtual entertainment on various platforms these past few months please consider donating to the CIC Relief Fund. If we lose artists like the CIC Members and their employees, entertainment as we know it will be forever altered. Link to donate: https://www.costumeindustrycoalition.com/donate

Have you seen costumes that include lights or have some form of lighting trick? Ever wonder how in the world that is achieved and who are the geniuses behind it? Well, this weekend’s Member Highlight is of Hat Rabbit Studio specializing in those special effects! Founded in 2014 by Robyn Coffey and her partner Aaron Hartnett, Hat Rabbit Studio provides a full range of stagecraft services, from the page to the stage, including design, fabrication, installation, training and workshopping, troubleshooting, and refurbishments of costumes, puppets, prop, and wearable special effects.

Robyn and Aaron met in 2009 while they were both working at Michael Curry Design in Portland, Oregon. Robyn was in the fabric department and Aaron was a puppet mechanic. “We always say that he built the skeletons and she built the skins.” After working together on a lot of projects and having traveled all over the world for work, they decided to strike off on their own! “We carried with us the sense of fun and family that was such an integral part of that shop.”

Robyn and Aaron were married in 2013 and Michael “let us raid his stock of props and puppets to decorate the forest” where the wedding was held. See the photo in today's photos. After their magical wedding they moved to NYC and started working out of their apartment. Once the business picked up Hat Rabbit Studio “upgraded” to a 200 sq ft studio in Brooklyn. Then in 2019 they expanded even further into their 3rd space in Brooklyn, a beautiful 1100 sq ft space. However, due to COVID 19 all work stopped in March 2020, Hat Rabbit Studio unfortunately had to give up their studio at the end of Sept 2020.

Hat Rabbit Studio’s story is like many of the CIC Members who are fighting to survive this “pause”, please consider donating to the CIC Relief Fund and help the Members keep their lights on. We know times are tough, if you can’t donate please SHARE our posts! Help us continue spreading awareness of and all the Members who create magic everyday! Be sure to like and follow Hat Rabbit Studio on Instagram and Facebook and follow along as we feature them this weekend!
