S + A’s wedding was intimate with just about 90 guests and we were faced with the challenge of how to make the barn, which can seat up to 300+, feel full.
Sure, we could have draped the space, but that seemed too easy, overdone and not quite our couple’s aesthetic. We talked about some hanging installations, but that wasn’t sitting right either. Then it hit me. Here we are on this gorgeous property, why not work with what we have and bring the outside in. So we created several ecotones throughout the space, these gradual transitions where grassy meadow and forest say hello to one another.
We started with just grasses and echinacea, which then weaved to more grasses, echinacea, a touch of tall fennel and a solitary evergreen tree. Next came an edge where fennel, yarrow and grasses met and mingled with tall birch trees and textural evergreens. Around the back of the barn was the forest, full of ferns, moss, birch and evergreen trees. We built the forest at the entrance to the washrooms, which gave guests an immersive and interactive experience with the installation.
A huge thank you to Ryan who helped me source most of what you see here. I can’t thank my incredible and talented team enough for bringing this vision seamlessly to life - , .cowan, , , , , ,
