Delve into the captivating world of Edo-era Japan———

Utagawa Hiroshige's exquisite woodblock prints, entitled "100 Famous Views of Edo," epitomizes the artist's profound mastery of ukiyo-e craftsmanship. Each print offers a window into Hiroshige's deep connection with the landscapes and culture of Edo, showcasing a nuanced interplay of colors and meticulous attention to detail.

The bustling streets and tranquil vistas of old Edo are meticulously captured by Hiroshige, displaying changing seasons and atmospheric nuances. The viewer is invited to contemplate the ephemeral beauty of the world. For the first time in twenty-four years, Hiroshige’s prints return to public display at the Brooklyn Museum.

The PUMA campaign stands as MATTE’s most ambitious undertaking to date. The production was a logistical marvel, a testament to the tireless efforts of hundreds of crew members from around the world. Ten shoots, in five countries, meticulously planned and executed over thousands of hours, brought this vision to life.

Each shoot was a flurry of activity, meticulously orchestrated by our internal creative and production team. We coordinated a vast array of personnel – local crews, external production teams, OCP’s, extras, and the star athletes themselves, to operate at full tilt within shoot windows that were only a few hours.

From Rio to Madrid, Manchester to Milan, each shoot required newfound nimbleness; managing constantly shifting absolutes and unpredictable circumstances—all in foreign environments.

———Walking on water with saffron-colored pathways

Christo, the Bulgarian-born artist, who is famous with his wife Jeanne-Claude for wrapping the Reichstag, the Arc De Triomphe, and installing 7,500 gates along Central Park, always dreamt of walking on water.

In 2016, Christo realized The Floating Piers on Lake Iseo in Italy using 3-kilometers of fabric over an undulating and floating dock system which connected Sulzano to the island of Monte Isola and San Paolo. Visitors were urged to walk along barefoot so they could feel the fabric and the motion of the water under their feet. Perspectives were at play with this piece: The mountain ranges provided additional points of view while the light and water transformed the color of the fabric over time.

Prolific Italian photographer, Luigi Ghirri, sought a new mode of visualizing his home’s landscape, creating hundreds of powerful images throughout the 1970s and 1980s. Considered to be one of the leaders of color photography and with an uncanny eye for composition, Ghirri focused on the landscape around him while juxtaposing scale and illusion for dream-like atmospheres.

——— “The ultimate role of photography…consists of its capacity to slow down our fast and chaotic way of reading images… It is as if it were possible, for once, to read a newspaper article without someone constantly turning the pages for us. Photography elicits a slowness of vision that I find extremely important, when we consider how technology has sped up perception in recent years.”

“Architecture was my way of expressing my ideals: to be simple, to create a world equal to everyone, to look at people with optimism, that everyone has a gift. I don’t want anything but general happiness. Why is that bad?” ——— Oscar Niemeyer

Dweller Forever and Ever ———

The 5-day festival experience celebrates Black excellence across all genres of dance music—from electronic, to techno, to house. The festival, which featured more than 80 artists for its 5th year, amplifies the artistry of Black DJs while properly contextualizing the influence of Black creators throughout the past, present and future of dance music.

Dweller was founded by and is curated alongside Enyo Amexo and Ryan Clarke; bringing to life the multi-day series of dancing at underground nightlife hotspots in Brooklyn and Queens and lectures at legendary spaces like MoMA PS1.

Exploring his insights from conceptualizing the new global campaign for and how he worked with rapper Jack Harlow to capture the essence of Harlow’s hometown Louisville, Kentucky, to create an authentic atmosphere on-set with his life-long crew.

“The most important and exciting part of this campaign was being able to blend Jack Harlow’s world with that of the New Balance 550—one where they collide and coexist naturally. Louisville local love, brought to you by the timeless, classic 550.”

Capturing the sensitivity of human suffering———

Swedish photographer Christer Strömholm photographed highly personal scenes in black-and-white, bringing color to the communities he lived in by depicting his subjects as close friends—everyone from artists, mothers, children, and found friends part of the transgender community, shedding light on issues of sexuality and gender in the 1960’s.

“Working with photographic imagery is for me a way of living. When I think about and look closely at my pictures, they are all in their special way nothing other than a self-portrait; a part of my life.”

Let’s see each other eye to eye ———

Level (1997), by Berlin-based artist Hans Hemmert, was part of a showcase produced by Galerie Gebauer in Berlin to create performances that facilitated interaction and participation with the audience. Each participant’s height was measured and they were given blue platforms to attach to their shoes—making every person the exact same height, 2m tall.

The House in the Trees ———

Casa Albero, built in the 1970’s as a weekend getaway abode, sits deep within the forest about 18 miles from Rome. Two architects and husband and wife, Giuseppe Perugini and Uga de Plaisant, created a brutalist experiment playing with concrete, glass and steel in an entirely modular creation.

Architects are currently trying to preserve the structure since the home was left vacant for years after the homeowners’ deaths, with graffiti marking each and every crevice.

The master of light, color and manipulation———

Christopher Doyle’s lush cinematographic style, featuring highly-saturated vivid vignettes and visceral shadow play, has been acclaimed in iconic films such as Wong Kar Wai’s Happy Together, Fallen Angels, and Chungking Express. Doyle’s work places emphasis on intimacy, intent and the emotional balance of what is known versus what is a dream.

“It is being subjective and objective, it is being engaged and yet standing back and noticing something that perhaps other people didn’t notice before, or celebrating something that you feel is beautiful or valid, or true or engaging in some way.”
