Music of course elicits many emotions, but one of its steadiest and best qualities is the way it can spark uncomplicated joy, even in very complicated times. For Bonus Tracks this week, here are a few musical offerings that spark joy.

We are over the moon to have & at the 2024 Brooklyn Folk Festival! They’ll be gracing the Main Stage on Saturday, November 9th at 5:50pm. These two together is magical and you absolutely can’t miss it! ♥️

“…when I put on Yva Las Vegass’ album, I was born in a place of sunshine and the smell of ripe mangoes. I was knocked out by the way she infuses Venezuelan folk traditions with a punk aesthetic. I heard songs as allegories, songs that told stories and songs that felt like deep primal screams, all accompanied by a traditional Venezuelan cuatro — a small stringed instrument similar to a ukulele.” -

“Songwriter Miriam Elhajli has carved out a distinctive sound that draws equally on jazz, 70s South American nuevo cancion and levantine sounds, reflecting her Venezuelan-Moroccan heritage. She cuts loose with an expressive, constantly mutable voice, likes fingerpicking her acoustic guitar in odd tunings and writes intriguing, thoughtfully imagistic lyrics.” - New York Music Daily

We are so honored to welcome back the legendary Terri Thal with her book ‘My Greenwich Village: Dave, Bob and Me’. Terri will be around signing books almost all weekend, be sure to visit her in the Parish Hall! She’s one of our favorite storytellers and such a dear friend to Jalopy.

“Terri Thal’s memoir is told from the privileged position of not only having been there for the crowning, but as a woman on the cultural front lines. Her detailed recall brings a fresh perspective on the Greenwich Village folk scene of the ‘60s.” ― Marc Eliot, best-selling author of Phil Ochs: Death of a Rebel

Terri Thal was very much a part of the folk music world in 1960s Greenwich Village, New York. Few people know that she was 21-year-old Bob Dylan’s first manager prior to his contract with Albert Grossman and Columbia Records. She also managed musician Dave Van Ronk (who later became her husband), and others to include the Roche sisters, Paul Geremia and The Holy Modal Rounders. She booked performances at coffee houses, clubs and basket houses. On 6 September 1961, she recorded a set from a young Bob at The Gaslight Café – a celebrated performance as it is one his first known live recordings.

Terri tells us what it was like to hang out in the Village coffee houses, to host folk singers like Tom Paxton and Phil Ochs who hung out at her apartment, and to be a manager. We hear her view and involvement of the 1960s socialist organizations, and how she later merged her professional work in not- for-profit agencies.
