Today we’re playing through Catherine Liu’s ‘Workers of the Culture Industry Unite! (LOL)’ an unsparing and yet affectionate new series that addresses the problems of artists’ work in the age of finance capitalism. Joined by Jason Myles, Harry Tafoya, Josh Citarella and Claywoman, they explore the history of patronage systems and whats left of the social, spiritual, and political function of the artist, the musician, the critic, and of aesthetic experience today. Liu asks how we can create solidarity among artists as workers, without falling into the traps of ‘institutional critique’. At a time when the corporations and institutions that support artists are suffering from endless crises of legitimacy, how can we have better conversations about what artistic and aesthetic freedom really look like? Read Liu’s full description of the series on our website.

Playing from Noon-5pm today

In July we’ll launch this series as a channel (before the paywall) along with an accompanying episode from Liu reflecting on her conversations and research.

Catherine Liu is an American cultural theorist and author whose areas of research include Sinophone cinema, French literature, critical theory, identity politics, and visual arts. Catherine Liu is the author of Virtue Hoarders: The Case Against the Professional Managerial Class and The American Idyll: Academic Anti-Elitism as Cultural Critique.
