Occitanie Producers of the week:

The Occitanie producer of the week is Domaine de Nizas. The history of the domaine is rooted in both the Languedoc terroir and in individuals passionate about wines and land. In 2018, François Lurton, a winemaker and descendant of a family of Bordeaux producers, took over the reins of the Domaine de Nizas in Pézenas. Covering 40 hectares near the Mediterranean, the vineyard is located on an exceptional terroir with very varied soils. These deep soils are characterized by their strong draining power as well as their clayey subsoils (10 to 15 meters deep) that retain water, freshness and humidity. This characteristic is vital to the vines as they can draw on these reserves to not suffer from water stress, allowing for the slow and harmonious ripening of the grapes. In addition to the soil, the vines benefit from excellent climatic conditions; light northerly winds blowing over the mountains towards the sea, and Mediterranean sunshine 320 days a year. This privileged environment ensures the protection and longevity of the vineyard. With such exceptional conditions, the estate decided to grow only noble grape varieties, including the 60-year-old Carignan, Grenache and Syrah. With such a commitment to authenticity, the wines produced are a true homage to the beautiful land on which they grow. Each one of the cuvées presents the finest characteristics, creating wines that are not only delicious but truly an experience to drink. So, the next time you are looking for a wine like no other, consider trying a wine from Domaine de Nizas.

Occitanie Producers of the week : .girard

The Occitanie producer of the week is Domaine Girard. Founded in 1928, by Jean Girard, the great grandfather of now the now 4th generation owner, Philippe Girard, who took control of the family estate in 2000. Located in the village of Alaigne in the Aude region, the domaine extends over thirty hectares of difficult soils that produce strong vines and encourage strong grape production. This unique terroir, enhanced by having the backdrop of the Pyrenees, is characterized by the oceanic influences that combat the dominant Mediterranean omnipresent everywhere else in Languedoc. The vines are cultivated with respect for biodiversity and as such, the team is always working to improve its process, especially by limiting pesticide and fertilizer use. It is therefore natural that in 2019, the estate obtained its HVE 3 certification, which formalizes the environmentally conscious policies the team has implemented over the years. Thus, the HVE certification allows Domaine Girard to reconnect with positive and sustainable practices, while also meeting the high expectations of consumers who are concerned about the quality of their food and the future of the planet. Philippe, a committed independent winegrower, cultivates a diversity of grape varieties that are known for expressing all their character: Chardonnay for the whites, Pinot Noir and Syrah for the atypicals and of course Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Malbec for the elaborate AOC Malepère wines. So, if you are looking for deliciously complex wines, consider trying the beautiful products of Domaine Girard.

Occitanie Producers of the week :

The Occitanie producer of the week is Domaine Caujolle Gazet. Domaine Caujolle-Gazet is located on the immediate edge of the southern flank of the Larzac plateau, in the towns of Lauroux and Poujols, in the department of Hérault. This area is influenced by both the Mediterranean and the first significant reliefs of the southern edge of the Massif Central, resulting in a contrasting but relatively cold and humid climate, conducive to a strong expression of finesse in the wines. The soils, made up of clay-limestone scree, are very stony but nevertheless have a good fertility, especially when combined with the significant rainfall. Plus, being located under the scree of the Larzac, the plots of the estate are marked by very steep slopes with north or north-east exposures, which limit the risk of extreme temperatures. These natural conditions make this area one of the finest terroirs of Languedoc. One of the marvelous aspects of the winegrower's job is to find in the bottle the culmination of the choices made both in the vineyard and in the cellar over one or more years. In the fields, the team uses only natural methods that focus on developing the fruit and reaching a fresh balance. Taking advantage of the terroir and the team’s curiosity, the estate experiments with traditional grape varieties of the appellation, original grape varieties for the region (Pinot noir, Chardonnay, Merlot), and rare varieties (white Carignan). Despite the many choices, the estate's range of wines is decidedly short: five red wines, one rosé, and two whites, all certified organic, to maintain only the highest quality. So, if you are looking for impeccable wines, consider trying any of those from the Domaine Caujolle Gazet!

Occitanie Producer of the week : .du.pins

The Occitanie producer of the week is Domaine du Pins. The estate is found in the small town of Moulès and Baucels, in the Hérault region. The vines are found on the cliffs of the Terrasses du Larzac, which is at the limits of the Pic St Loup, where the roots grow in limestone and clay. The resulting grapes bring the incredible freshness and tannins that are quintessential of the great wines of Languedoc. The vineyard is made up of 48 hectares of vines in the heart of a varied landscape between mountains and plains. 15 hectares are meticulously tended to in order to produce only the highest quality wines. From year to year the vineyard is restructured by incorporating different grape varieties to produce wines that will please everyone's tastes. This is why in 2019, 4 hectares of Viognier, Vermentino and Roussane vines were planted. Although new grapes are introduced, the consistently grown grape varieties, such as Syrah, Grenache or Chardonnay, make it possible to produce wines with fantastic character year over year. The domaine’s particular geography favors a slow and progressive ripening of the grapes, which is beneficial for the aromatic complexity and freshness of the wines. So, if you are looking for wines that truly respect and represent the best of Languedoc, be on the look out for some Domaine du Pins.

Occitanie Producers of the week : .les.cedres.de.robert

The Occitanie producer of the week is Château les Cèdres de Robert. Formerly called Castel of Robert, the estate was taken over in 2013 by Delphine Serres de la Roussière and took the name Robert’s Cèdars. The vineyard, found in the heart of the Malepère appelation, is wedged between the foothills of the Massif Central “called the Black Mountains” to the North and the Pyrenees to the South. The property is located in Lauraguais and more specifically in the wine region of the terroir of the Dominicans. This area combines the Mediterranean sunshine and precipitation from the Atlantic. The vineyard finds itself in a transitional climate, which provides the optimal conditions for growing grapes, including for varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Syrah and Grenache. Moreover, the alley between the Pyrenees and the Black Mountain generates powerful winds from the East or West, wafting the grapes, leading to optimal health. Not only are the grapes respected in the vineyard, they are even more so in the cellar. Everything in the cellar has been designed to maximize the value of the fruits. For example, the vines are in close proximity to the winery, allowing for a short path from harvest. Also, when pressing the harvest, the team uses slow, soft and consistent pressure to extract only the highest quality juices. Each year, the terroir can produce grapes of the same variety with drastically varied characteristics. To honor the differences, the team utilizes smaller vats during the vinification process, making each cuvée and vintage completely unique. With such meticulous attention paid to these details, the wine from this château are truly worth searching out.

Occitanie Producers of the week :

The Occitanie producer of the week is Domaine Haut Martin. The domaine is located in the small village of Gondrin, in the heart of Gers. In 1920, the Prataviera-Jegerlehner family’s winemaking journey began when Jean Francois Morel settled and acquired an estate in Gascony. In 1960, Denise & Jean Jegerlehner opened their first cellar and further grew the vineyard. In 1988, the daughter of Denise and Jean, Elizabeth Prataviera, followed her passion for winemaking and, along with Pierre, further extended the estate by 160 hectares. In 2003, the family bottled their first wine, and now, the family produces over one million bottles annually. Despite the size, the team continues to respect the land, similar to how they did when their work started over 100 years ago. Specific steps are taken to continue this commitment, for example, the water is treated to limited pesticide use and only organic fertilizers are applied to protect soil health. The family continues to honor their tradition by using many of the same winemaking methods as when the estate was first founded. For example, the team only harvests during the night and early morning to maintain aromas and avoid oxidation, the grapes are pressed under nitrogen and the wine is aged for at least 3 months. With generations of know how and incredible passion, the family has perfected its process to capture the beautiful characteristics of the terroir. Truly each bottle is a homage to the family and its land!

Occitanie Producers of the week :

The Occitanie producer of the week is Enclos de la Croix. The 23 hectare vineyard is found in the heart of Herault, in the village of Lansargues, near Montpellier. Established in 1814, eight generations of the family have passionately harvested these vines and lands. François Frezouls, the current owner of the domaine first took over in 1992, when the estate faced financial difficulties after a particularly destructive frost. François, along with his sisters, purchased the shares from different family members, and began to work on accomplishing his dream of running an estate guided by the goal of building towards an authentic and responsible future. In order to build a responsible future, the vineyard is certified organic. The team also prioritizes biodiversity, by respecting existing nature and recognizing the important roles each organisms plays in building healthy soils. The vineyard is also run on a zero waste policy, pivoting the team to view each source of waste as an opportunity. To remain authentic, the teams employs the 200 years of generational know how to extract the finest characteristics from the rich land. Moreover, all of the work, from field to bottle, is done with the utmost respect of and passion for the unique terroir. Occitanie Producers of the week :

The Occitanie producer of the week is Domaine de Magnaut. The vineyard is located in Gascony in the town of Fources in the north-west of the Gers department. In total, the family estate covers 45 hectares of vines, 80% of which are planted with white grapes and the remaining are covered with Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Tannat and Syrah plants. The sandy soils of the domaine provide the perfect environment for producing armagnac and the hillsides are ideal for white grape maturation. The red-grape vines are planted along clay and limestone plateaus that, due to exposure to the sun and wind, produce strong and powerful wines. In 1970, Pierre Terraube produced the first Armagnac of the domaine, some of which can still be found in their cellars. In 2000, Jean-Marie Terraube, the current owner, turned towards years of professional wine experience to ensure that the domaine continues to produce the highest quality products. One step has been to utilize only HVE 3 approved agricultural methods. To this day, Domaine de Magnaut creates an incredible range of Côtes de Gascogne wines, Flocs de Gascogne and Armagnac, which continue to receive prestigious awards. With the incredible passion and years of knowledge, each bottle that leaves the domaine is truly unique and perfectly highlights the rich terroir of Gascogne.

Occitanie Producers of the week :

The Occitanie producer of the week is Domaine Saint Thomas. Located on the coast of the Mediterranean sea, this domaine continually pushes the bounds of wine producing. Found in the Collioure, Argelès-sur-Mer and Cabestany appellations, the vines absorb each of the unique characteristics of the terroir, providing incredible potential for beautiful wines and great creativity. Since being built in 2012, the domaine has been run according to three guiding principles to ensure the highest quality of wine. The first such principle is respect for the integrity of the grape. In accordance with this belief, the team uses the finest technologies during the extraction, maturation and aging processes to preserve the natural qualities of each fruit. The second is to limit the estate’s environmental impact. Focus has been placed on supporting biodiversity, regulating greenhouse gas emissions and reducing water consumption. Some actions to live up to this focus include constructing solar panels on all roofs, limiting use of chemicals and beginning the three year conversion process to organic practices in 2020. The final fundamental concept is to facilitate and secure the work of the domaine’s employees. Each year, the owners invest in new equipment to maintain everyone’s safety and ensure that the work remains a pleasure and not a calamity. In addition to these three morals, the one overarching goal of the team is to build a convivial place where people can share their passion for wine. As such, Saint Thomas produces a wide range of wines, including red, white, rosé, sparkling and vin doux naturelles. Each of the cuvées capture the beautiful characteristics of the terroir while bringing a smile to the face of anyone who tries them!

Occitanie Producers of the week :

The Occitanie producer of the week is Domaine la Louvière. This sustainably run vineyard is found in the heart of the exclusive Malepère appellation, in the small town of Malvies. This region is unique firstly because of its microclimate, warmed by the southern sun and cooled by the winds from the Mediterranean. Secondly, like the region’s name explains, the soils are covered in “poor” rocks, that force roots to work harder to reach water. With both of these factors in mind, the grapes harvested produce unique characteristics that produce fantastic wines. In 1992, Klaus Grohe, along with his four sons, acquired the domaine. Guided by their love for wine and for the terroir, the family has worked tirelessly to perfect and produce only the finest and most elegant wines. Their work starts in the lands, by using only organic-certified agricultural methods. This includes not using any chemical fertilizers or pesticides, prioritizing biodiversity and using effective micro-organisms to promote healthy soils. The second major method has been to marry traditional methods with the modern. For example, in honor of tradition, from start to finish all of the work, especially harvesting, is done by hand. Moreover, to limit interaction with the product, gravity is used as much as possible to move the grapes throughout their vinification process. In compliment, new technology are implemented both to exert a small yet consistent pressure to extract the finest juices from the fruit as well as to regulate temperature during maturation. With such incredible dedication and meticulous processes, the red, white, rosé and sparkling wines of La Louvière beautifully honor the terroir while incredibly incorporating surprises sure to please any palette.
