Join us on Thursday, June 27, for a special concert celebrating the music of NYGS guest artist Maestro Jamie Zenamon. Maestro Zenamon is originally from Bolivia, and has lived in Brazil for many years. He is known the world over as a composer, guitarist, conductor, and educator. During the seminar, he will lead workshops and masterclasses, and conduct the NYGS Guitar Orchestra, which will perform three of his original compositions.
This special celebration of Maestro Zenamon’s music will be held at the Americas Society with guitarists Matt Kaplan, Pierre Ferreyra-Mansilla, and Daniel Moreno, and cellist Mark Humburg, all alumni of the Mannes School of Music.

NYGS at Hunter College
Welcome to the Hunter College Department of Music, the host of the 24th New York Guitar Seminar. Hunter is a distinguished division of the City University of New York. Located on the vibrant Upper East Side of NYC, Hunter Music has excellent facilities for the NYGS concerts, ensemble rehearsals, workshops, masterclasses, exhibitor displays, and practice rooms. Plus lockers for the participants’ instruments!!! The Participants’ Concert, João Luiz Guitar Quartet Concert, and Multimedia Tribute to Oscar Ghiglia and Bruce Holzman will all take place at the acoustically stunning Lang Recital Hall.
Hunter is directly across the street from Americas Society, where the all-Zenamon music concert will take place with Matt Kaplan and Friends. The neighborhood is filled with cafes, restaurants, delis, fruit and newsstands, and late-night pubs. You can spend all of your non-seminar time shopping at Bloomingdales (a few blocks down Lexington Avenue), and at all the high-end European designers (two blocks away along Madison Avenue.) This year’s multimedia tribute is to two NYGS faculty who were among the most influential teachers of the last half century: Maestros Oscar Ghiglia and Bruce Holzman.
Maestro Ghiglia (1938-2024) had a long international career as a performer and educator. He was a student of Andrés Segovia, recording and performing worldwide for over 70 years. In addition to performing, he was a passionate teacher, founding the summer guitar master classes at Aspen Music Festival in the early 1970s. Following his time as Segovia’s assistant at the Accademia Musicale Chigiana in Siena, Italy, he continued to lead the Chigiana class for nearly 50 years, and held visiting professorships at multiple conservatories. In 2008, the NYGS featured “The Ghiglia Legacy,” in honor of his 70th birthday.
Maestro Bruce Holtzman (1950-2023) was the epitome of a dedicated teacher. He was the Director of the Guitar Program at Florida State University from 1972 until his passing in 2023. He held many visiting professorships around the world. His students have won prizes at all the most prestigious international competitions and teach at the top colleges, conservatories, and universities throughout the world. The fifth NYGS, “El Maestro/Tradition of the Masters” took place in 2005 and was affectionately known as “BruceFest,” honoring Bruce with the lifetime achievement award.
Both maestros were deeply revered by the guitar community and both are deeply missed. This celebration of their lives, music, and contributions to the guitar will be led by their disciples Laura Oltman and Michael Newman, featuring tributes by a dozen guitar luminaries. He received his Master of Music degree from Mannes as a student of Michael Newman.
João Luiz is originally from São Paulo, Brazil, and his quartet includes three brilliant young Brazilian guitarists under his tutelage:
🎸 Octávio Deluchi (Minas Gerais)
🎸 Eduardo Gutterres (Porto Alegre)
🎸 Nicolas Norto Silva (Maceió)
The program will include original works by João Luiz, along with works by Heitor Villa-Lobos, Tom Jobim, Paulo Bellinati, and more. Don’t miss out on this sure-to-be memorable concert. Get tickets at mannesguitar.com.
