The NYC Gala scene is busy throughout the year, but spring events feel extra special. Proud to support AFUWI and their mission to ensure increased access to higher education for students at The UWI.

The theme for this year’s gala, “Celebrating MBBA at 40: Advancing Our Purpose. Advancing Our Power”—speaks to the impactful role our organization has played in advancing equality and excellence in the pursuit of justice, encouraging the development of Black lawyers, law students, and legal professionals, all with the valued support of our allies and champions.

The Role of Donors in Your Hero Story
As a consultant, it is my privilege to support nonprofit leaders who providing amazing services and create engaging programs to support their beneficiaries.
And yet even with all the the good things they do, and the many lives they have touched, they struggle with converting prospects into donors OR securing increased donations.
I always learn and grow from my clients and one day it occurred to me; perhaps one adjustment could lead to more successful outcomes.

A CLOSER LOOK AT SPONSORSHIP
Q: If my company provides sponsorship towards a nonprofit gala, is my gift tax deductible?
A: It depends on what your company received in connection with your gift.
Did you receive an acknowledgment (vs. advertising) in exchange for your sponsorship?
WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE?
Acknowledgement
The nonprofit puts your company’s name on printed materials, and/or supplies a link to your homepage, this qualifies as acknowledgment.
Advertising
The nonprofit puts your company’s name on printed materials, and supplies a link to (or endorses) your products, this qualifies advertising.
PER IRS RULES
Your sponsorship won’t be tax-deductible, and the organization would need to claim your donation as income.
ANY EXCEPTIONS TO THIS RULE?
A: Yes
If a sponsorship package includes an ad in one of the company’s publications, the portion equal to the fair market value of the ad would not be tax-deductible, while the remaining amount can be deducted.
Always check with your accountant or tax preparer.
