A CLOSER LOOK AT SPONSORSHIP Q: If my company provides sponsorship towards a nonprofit gala, is my gift tax deductible? A: It depends on what your company received in connection with your gift. Did you receive an acknowledgment (vs. advertising) in exchange for your sponsorship? WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE? Acknowledgement The nonprofit puts your company’s name on printed materials, and/or supplies a link to your homepage, this qualifies as acknowledgment. Advertising The nonprofit puts your company’s name on printed materials, and supplies a link to (or endorses) your products, this qualifies advertising. PER IRS RULES Your sponsorship won’t be tax-deductible, and the organization would need to claim your donation as income. ANY EXCEPTIONS TO THIS RULE? A: Yes If a sponsorship package includes an ad in one of the company’s publications, the portion equal to the fair market value of the ad would not be tax-deductible, while the remaining amount can be deducted.
