I can’t believe today I am having a hysterectomy at the age of 40. I can’t believe I will never be able to carry a child. I can’t believe I may have cancer. I can’t believe the way this last year I’ve lived. However what I will always believe in is the power of Jehovah God. He causes to become and I am leaving today in His hands for when I am weak I am powerful. I’ll be back and I’ll be better. Love all my EPIC people and to my beautiful students: no worrying today. I’ve taken you all on my spiritual journey with me and you already know prayer is powerful. Hold that down.

EPIC FAM…. The incomparable Erica Ford Her heart and energy was exactly what I always imagined it to be. She is the embodiment of community advocacy and culture (specifically hip hop culture) If you don’t know you better ask somebody. A true honor to meet someone I looked up to since I was a kid. 🙏🏽

This work is hard, but so gratifying to see God at work. Thank you to the entire EPIC Family: parents, veteran students, volunteers, staff, pda, our wonderful creative dance educators and the most important ones of all: EVERY SINGLE LAST EPIC STUDENT!!! You are the heart and soul of everything we fight to do. Just when they think youth are deaf and blind EPIC proves them wrong every single time. We never claimed to be perfect, we just know we care. Thank you to such an adventurous ride this year. It has only made us stronger and I can’t wait to show you all what we have in store for our 15th Anniversary season that kicks off July 15th. No! We’re not lucky we’re blessed! YES! Until next time 🙏🏽

First prayers out to any one who has been a victim of any type of abuse including Domestic Violence. As an entity that prides itself on building strong black & brown individuals (majority whom are female) the video released today is quite disturbing. Please reinforce with our youth (boys included) that they never have to settle for less than their worth. If it makes you uncomfortable that is enough for you to leave or end it.

This unfortunately is a generation full of youth who don’t truly know their worth. We’ve never seen more 3 year olds with anxiety and teens that are tremendously insecure than ever before. The boys don’t even know they are worthy and capable of being great men coupled with young ladies not knowing what a great man is supposed to be like. Youth see and watch everything. Just when you think they aren’t absorbing they really are. They just don’t allow everyone to see. This generation has been let down, abandoned and at times dismissed. Let’s talk about what they are seeing on a regular basis: They see their families spiraling, broken homes with broken up parents, how those around them treat significant others, social media foolishness, the normalization of toxic things especially in relationships (it’s damn near glorified let’s be honest) etc etc.

If we want to protect them form being the next diddy or Cassie we must first make sure we are truly leading by example, having those real tough conversations and revisiting those conversations as many times as needed. Never assume your child is good because they appear ok. How many times do adults say they aren’t when they truly are not? Tracking them on their phones is not checking in. That is only checking in on their physical safety, but what about their mental, emotional and social safety? Because they are being tested in these areas everyday, therefore the conversations should be regular and not every blue moon. We can assure you everyday, several times a day, your child is being exposed to something truly not for them.

You really could be the best parent inculcating everything they truly need to be equipped with just for all that hard work to be washed away by the many influences that surround us all today. Let’s ask ourselves if life is treacherous for adults: are our youth not living in the same satanic world we do? So if it doesn’t make you feel good then imagine what it feels like for the kids. Therefore we teach them from what we’ve learned or teach them to do better and keep teaching. Sometimes they do not get it. You may actually have to keep saying it to them until you are blue in the face, but eventually they will get it. Pray about it & trust in that.

So let’s continue to pour into them and each other. Pour into yourselves too. Never feel ashamed to ask for help. Everyone needs a village and we are never alone. 🙏🏽 ~ Ms Jas 🫶🏽🩰
