Founded in 1984 under the guidance and inspiration of the late conductor and tenor Chongmao Zhu, Chinese Musical Arts, Inc. Haiyun Chorus has been a New York State registered not-for-profit organization for the past 30 years. Its mission is to introduce the Chinese vocal music to the audience of New York metropolitan areas and, through various performances and vocal renditions, to create a better understanding of the Chinese culture, arts, and tradition.

Study and play music together! 🎶🪕

Learn to play the erhu, dizi, guzheng, p**a, percussion, or yangqin and experience traditional Chinese music and song in the community. Thanks to the continued grant support of NYSCA, DCLA, and the DYCD, adults and youth participants will receive free orchestra practice supervision, subsidized private and small group lessons and performance awards.

Participants will study and play Chinese folk and classical music alongside seasoned practitioners under the supervision of professional teaching artists. Weekly practice sessions free-of-charge are open to all ages at low-intermediate level and up. Participants should bring their own instruments and have sight-reading proficiency. Optional Instrumental Tutorials available at subsidized rates.

🎶Featuring: Colombian soprano Sasha Gutiérrez and Italian pianist Diego Tornelli

Praised by her “versatility” and “splendid vocalism” (Voce di Meche), Colombian soprano Sasha Gutiérrez is a passionate opera performer, soloist and recitalist. Her signature roles include Helena in Britten’s A midsummer night’s dream; Fiordiligi in Mozart’s Cosiì fan tutte; the title role in Puccini’s Suor Angelica; Micaëla
in Bizet’s Carmen.

To maintain opera alive in New York City during the pandemic, Sasha founded The Opera Next Door (TOND), an independent opera company based in Brooklyn that has the mission of fostering relationships with and within communities by creating free, site-specific opera productions in collaboration with community groups and leaders in diverse, working-class New York neighborhoods. As a result of this endeavor, Sasha was named one of the Top 30 Professionals of the Year 2021 by Musical America for creating opportunities for fellow musicians during the pandemic.

Italian pianist Diego Tornelli is a sought-after accompanist, coach, and collaborator based in New York City. He holds degrees from both SMU, Dallas and the Juilliard School, where he has taught Italian diction, worked as an interpretation coach, curated and directed the school’s first-ever Italian Liederabend, and was the long-time Collaborative Pianist for several classes. His main passion is to provide his guidance to professional classical singers in the industry who are looking to refine their diction skills and role interpretation; since spring 2021 he is proud to have served as one of the collaborators for The Opera Next Door.
