The Legendary Big Bob

This Friday Night (12/6) at 8PM we’re celebrating the legacy of Empire Roller Rink & the wonderful humans who called it home. With DJ sets by Big Bob & and live performances by Fonda Rae () & , this will be a night to remember!

Empire (1941 - 2007) was the first roller rink in the U.S. to replace organ music with a live DJ. In 1980, Bob approached owner & manager Gloria McCarthy about working at the rink - from February 20, 1981 onwards he was a resident DJ 6 nights a week. Together, they made history - Tuesdays were “Ladies’ Night,” with upwards of 700 skaters in attendance, among them Cher, Bill Butler, and many others.

Xanadu is proud to write the next chapter of roller skating in NYC with the help of the community that has built and sustained this incredible culture! Let’s celebrate the rich history of Empire Roller Rink together this Friday night ~ see you on *our* miracle maple!
