A healthy mind knows how to hope; it identifies and then hangs on tenaciously to a few reasons to keep going. Reasons for despair, anger, and sadness are, of course, all around. But the healthy mind knows how to bracket negativity in the name of endurance. It clings to evidence of what is still good and kind. It remembers to appreciate; it can — despite everything — still look forward to a hot bath, some chocolate covered pretzel, a chat or meal with a friend, or a satisfying day of work. It refuses to let itself be silenced by all the many sensible arguments in favor of rage and despondency. –Alain De Botton –Philosopher

There are no winners in War, only losers. I pray for the day when the human animal develops into a human “Being” and use words instead of actions to solve conflicts. May not happen in my lifetime or on this planet. Yet I know that this is possible.

“OK, so I’ve been meditating twice a day for probably 15 years, and I feel as if it has improved my ability to control my thoughts and emotions instead of letting them control me. But still sometimes I’ll walk by a mirror and have an extreme flash of self-loathing. Or I’ll get all agitated over something stupid, like finding a parking spot. Will that stuff ever go away?

Well, they can. Absolutely. You know, once I was on the India Today Conclave.1 They said, “Can you give us the three secrets of happiness?” I said: “First, there’s no secret. Second, there’s not just three points. Third, it takes a whole life, but it is the most worthy thing you can do.” I’m happy to feel I am on the right track. I cannot imagine feeling hate or wanting someone to suffer.”

A searching, playful, provocative discussion with the Buddhist monk Matthieu Ricard.
