Took a pause for the past week in one of my favorite places on earth with some of my favorite humans. Biked, hiked, walked around ponds, swam in lakes and ocean, stargazed, visited family, took real unhurried TIME to cook and eat and talk and move and just bathe in the beauty of nature along the Maine coast. Picked a wild blueberry or three. Feeling revived and ready for our remaining summer events, and *very* grateful to have an amazing team (Paige, Liz, Eliza 🩷) that keeps everything running smoothly so that I can take a real break 🙏🏼⛰️🏕️. Feels especially hopeful to return with a new trajectory for the upcoming election... Ready to write letters and phone bank to help make sure we protect democracy as a whole!!, reproductive rights, LGBTQIA rights, voting rights, climate change legislation, and the rights of working people over those of corporations… and put 2-3 new progressive justices on the Supreme Court?! Busy fall anyone?

Favorite flower alert! This week’s subscription flower is Cosmos. If I was forced to pick a favorite flower, it would have to be this one. Scroll to see both single and double petaled (“double click”) varieties. Pure poetry….All grown by Julia Bull of . Julia is one of the most experienced and savvy farmers I’ve ever had the pleasure of meeting. The most farmer-y farmer you can imagine, Julia always delivers on quality. A huge part of that is knowing what makes each flower bloom its absolute best for the purchaser. For example, Cosmos are difficult to keep alive in a vase if they’ve been harvested after being pollinated. Julia cut these stems for our subscription members at “bud stage,”preventing insect pollination and giving each bloom the chance to reveal itself in its new home.

Loving on Limonium this week. Statice, Sea Lavender, Russian Lavender, German Lavender… whatever you want to call it. It goes by many names across the globe and there are MANY species (~600!).

First slide is “rat tail” statice, also called pink pokers. It definitely seems to dance, and it’s always pink. This wily, seaweed - esque bloom is featured in our subscription bouquets this week - scroll to see how it contrasts but also finds support in the more commonplace Limonium sinuatum. Florists love statice - holds up for a long time without water, great for installations or personal items… such a wonderful winged, sculptural shape. Sturdy and dependable. Many colors… get into it!

Many of you are new here! Welcome — it’s an honor to have you follow along. Lately I’ve been writing a little bit about my rambling road from English major to brief expat to organic farmer to sustainable floral designer. In case it’s of any solace to any twenty or even thirty-something’s out there, life can feel like a real mess for a while. And even once you’ve landed on a thing that feels true and fulfilling and good enough, there is doubt. Imposter syndrome. Small business ownership is risky and exhausting, while also rewarding on many levels. This kind of writing is a bit scary, vulnerable, and feels self indulgent or even pointless right now? Yet, it seemed to be the story I felt like telling this month. So if it’s interesting or useful to you let me know. Part 3 of 4 up on the Journal. More to come next week!

This Sunday is our PEONY workshop! And May is month. So get your nails done, and come play with flowers!

As a daily Lexapro taker, and longtime therapy-goer, I am here for any and all ways to relieve mental stress and the cognitive idiosyncrasies we’re born with or develop with time.

What drew me to flower work were likely the same things that drew me to farming work many years ago: proximity to nature, working with my body (movement), and lots of repetitive tasks. All of these things — and especially COLOR — are so soothing to my mind and nervous system.

Working with flowers - trimming, arranging, and just taking them in and having them in your environment- can help lower stress. Even a Harvard study proves this. So consider signing up and joining me this weekend! LINK IN BIO!

Savoring tulips as we are soon going to see so many new spring flowers… these stunners - Cabanna Parrot and Silver Cloud (check out those dark stems if you scroll ➡️) were grown in Copake, NY by our friends Luke and Jenny and their hardworking crew at . I’ve know these two amazing farmers since 2010 or so. We were the weirdos at the local organic farming conference nerding out about flowers when the program was pretty much geared towards vegetable growers. Fast forward 14 years and they have scaled up from 1 acre to 20 in production, have two kids, three full time employees, and 25,000 dahlia tubers to plant this year;) Among many other beautiful varieties from Ranunculus and Anemones to Larkspur and Lisianthus. Eliza - who’s been with us for a couple years and is now our subscription production manager - caught up with Luke recently for some updates. Amazing gems in that interview (scroll to see one!). I think he captured tulips better than anyone I know when he said off the cuff: “They put on a real show for you right up to the point where they start dropping petals. It’s like an opera– if the main character dies she doesn’t just die— she sings for 45 minutes in the process.”

Absolutely delighting in these photos of wedding flowers from a rather infamous date in M*F history: 9/29/23. If you remember, my courageous amazing team battled 5’ of water that rose over the course of 40 min, just before we were supposed to load out. Instead, they waded out - these bouquets over their heads - but 5k worth of flowers left behind. Half of us drove through endless traffic to get to the wholesale flower district in time to buy all the flowers over again for their ceremony and reception tables. We leaned into baby’s breath - not a usual flower for us - but we were so grateful to be able to pull off the wedding despite the storm! Our clients couldn’t have been more cool about it all, and frankly win couple of the year from me since they dealt with cancelled flights and so many unexpected twists and turns. Thank you to for saving the day by Uber-ing us this arch, water tubes and all the vessels. What a day.

We had the pleasure of designing for Trixie and Pablo twice in 2023 - a sweet and simple spring ceremony in April, and a cocktail style dinner party at the Boathouse in August. The weather played nice and we managed to pull off tapers outside! ( ) September is one of our favorite months to hit up the for seasonal fruits to compliment the flowers…

Ranunculus undoes us again! We’re getting an early taste of this mesmerizing flower, thanks to our friends , who produce early Ranunculus in Red Hook, NY. Their 100+ year old farm (est. 1906!) has changed with the times over the years… initially part of the Violet growing boom in upstate New York, then switching to Anemones and eventually adding Ranunculus 15 years ago. These beguiling blooms will last up to 2 weeks with regular care!

Colorful winter flowers… for Vera’s Bat Mitzvah last January 💖. While we source close to 100% of our flowers locally for events April - October, the shoulder months average around 60-70%. Here, locally grown Anemones and Ranunculus paired with more of the same, but Japanese grown. Plus some California grown Eucalyptus and Protea, and pink cherry- forced early further south on the eastern seaboard. Dried bamboo we kept around was up-cycled here, spray painted with compost-safe milk paint. More on our practices coming soon on the blog this week!

Stole some time this morning to play with pink leftovers 🩷. There were approx a million other things I should have been doing - all having to do with sitting down at my computer. But I reminded myself that I set an intention in January to take weekly time for creative play. I really want to grow as a designer this year - explore and play with the familiar flowers I see each week of the year. The the studio was empty, so I put on some music and got lost in the tulips, anemone and sweet peas.

It’s Tulip season! Or is it?

Most New Yorkers won’t see their favorite neighborhood tulips pop up until March or April. However, increasingly, local flower farmers are taking to growing ‘winter tulips:’ forcing pre-chilled bulbs in passively heated greenhouses (with occasional spurts of electricity as needed:).

Like many spring-blooming bulbs, tulips need a period of vernalization, or chilling period - usually 12-14 weeks: a necessary part of the plant’s reproduction that promotes flowering. In colder climates, nature takes care of this, as fall-planted bulbs endure months of cold underground.

Once a bulb has been held at the proper temperature for the appropriate amount of time, farmers can plant these bulbs into crates or raised beds inside greenhouses that will provide the needed warmth to sprout and flower.

Passively warmed greenhouses - where trapped sunlight can bring ambient temps up 20 degrees or more — is a great place to bring on early tulip growth! We’re featuring winter-grown tulips this week in our subscription (see bouquet above)!

Tulips are native to Turkey and Central Asia. The selection of wild species began in 10th Century Persia, and really took off in 16th C. Europe. The Netherlands remain the ‘tulip growing capital of the world,’ still leading in production and breeding. Most US wholesalers and growers source their bulbs from the Netherlands.
