Today marks my twenty first anniversary performing as “Miss Show Business”, “The World’s Greatest Entertainer” aka, Judy Garland.
Despite the success that I have achieved (and I have been very lucky and blessed the last 15 years) It started out an uphill battle. To a degree it contours to be. The first six years breaking in were an absolute nightmare.
But you know, it was the incomparable George M. Cohan who maintained, “If those folks out there in the audience like you, that’s all you need to know”. I cannot thank those people enough. That is what has kept me going from day one til now.
This past weekend, October 28th, we had a lovely family of four attend, “Are You There Judy? It’s Me, Peter”.
You might remember that I cited the two 18 year old twins, Faith and Katie who are both starting their Musical Theatre studies in college. Two absolute sweethearts.
Their Mom, Nicole, reached out to me on my work page.
“Thank you, Peter, for your inspiring story and your outstanding performance! My girls and I were entranced from the moment the lights went down and you stepped onto the stage! You truly have a gift”💕-Nicole Puleo
Earlier today our ticket brokers sent along some other lovely reviews from our recent audience members I.E.
“Peter Mac is such an amazing talent and a terrific storyteller as he transforms and becomes Judy Garland right before your eyes in his touching one man show: ARE YOU THERE JUDY? IT’S ME, PETER”Amazing, Amazing, Amazing”
“Peter Mac is a genius in his interpretation of Judy Garland. And high marks for sharing intimate and painful moments of his childhood. Thank you for this unexpected and amazing performance. We look forward to seeing you again and again and again.”
These are the lovely rewards that we reap if we are lucky. Affirmations like these are important.Hopefully we touch people. People will forget that Is what Judy was really all about. Not just singing big pretty or stratospheric notes, but Tapping into the human condition. She could not have the kind of staying power that she has otherwise.
I am very grateful to those who have helped me along this twenty-one year journey. There have been many over the years.
My musical director these last 11 years, Ike ReevesIke Reeves. As well as the late, Bryan Miller, David Shenton, and Rich McDermottRich McDermott. Who all have been my “Mort Lindsey” over time.
Of course, my Wig master/designer,Mark Hoyer Having the right hair helps bring about 60 percent of the character to life. No joke.
My producer D.j. SchaeferD.j. Schaefer. John is certainly the only one who believed in what I had to offer as “Judy” out the gate. I am not talking about the play “Judy and Me”. I am talking about the concept of Peter Mac as Judy Garland. This was when blood relatives were telling me to give it up.
How lucky can you get to have people like Margaret O’Brien and the late, great Mickey Rooney endorse your work?! And to work with one of them to boot!
Playing out the Christmas scene from “Meet Me in St.Louis” with Margaret in 2012 and our “Judy/Tootie” MMISL stage reunion for Judy’s 95th birthday in 2017 are pinnacles for me in my career.
Singing to the brilliant composer and Judy’s once fiancé, John Meyer, the songs that he wrote for her. His enthusiasm and endorsement means a lot.
I would be less than remiss if didn’t mention Elliot Zwiebachwho unwittingly and inadvertently helped to “break the spell” or rather, the curse.
Shelley Hunter you were extremely supportive during those formative years in Los Angeles.
Mike Kincademy greatest champion in Massachusetts.
More recently, Eileen Conroy Marcus
My mom, Camille Fuocofor always believing in me. “Don’t you ever let anyone make you think that you can’t do this!”
From day one I have given the late, great Jim Bailey credit as my inspiration. Both in print and on video and radio interviews. Nobody can ever dispute that or say otherwise. It’s all there.
Over time I have made the statement that,
“Hamlet is nobody’s role anymore than Judy Garland is anybody’s role!”
I still always stand by that. Nobody can claim ownership. That would just be absurd. Though others have tried overtime. I fell into that spiders web big time when I first began.
As a matter of fact I believe it was Liza Minnelli who is reported to have said not too long ago, “Nobody can own Mama. She belongs to the world!”
I have no plans on “retiring” or throwing in the towel anytime soon. Too much has been invested in these last 21 years. We have not even scratched the surface yet. Several new projects in the works. So much more to come 😊
For everyone who has supported me unconditionally in the last two decades (and change), all my love and gratitude.
Here’s to the next 21 🌈🌈🌈🌈🌈
More importantly, here’s to the lady herself.
No matter how well many of us can swing a
Mic chord over our shoulder, slick a hand through an over lacquered brown bouffant, not pronounce our consonant’s or how sparkly our beaded gowns may shine, there will always only be one real Judy Garland.
