Their process uses improvisation, tasks, and musicality, channeling embodiment, joy, spontaneity, and the bonds of friendship,  working without judgement or standards. The Craft @ Governors Island: July 11th is just around the corner, and we absolutely cannot wait to introduce our next artist Lavy, who will be showcasing their work entitled househead, in collaboration with Juniper, Fireball, and Moodring.

This work in progress is rooted within the expressionism of nightlife and identity. As we have begun to reshape our newage post COVID world, we seek to be free and allow more celebration, a celebration of community, expression, q***rness, and love.

The Craft @ Governors Island: June 13th is just two days away! Our next artist spotlight goes to Garet Wierdsma, who will be showcasing her work entitled, “solivagant,” performed by Sydney Shu-Yu Chow and Rachel Ha-Eun Lee.

She earned her BFA in Dance and a minor in Business of Entertainment, Media and Technology in May of 2021, and now works full time as the Sales Coordinator of Dance Media Publications. With the weekend just around the corner, we cannot wait to introduce our next June 13th Artist, Grace Tong, who will be presenting an excerpt of her work entitled, “Garden Tongues,” performed alongside Sydney Shu-Yu Chow and Rachel Ha-Eun Lee.

Garden Tongues is a performance experience created by and for Asian femmes. Conceived in October 2020 (though in an on-going process), Garden Tongues is a spiteful description of bitter exotification, salty grandmothers' kitchens, and sweet collective strength. Today’s excerpt dances between hyper-simplifications of the “(East) Asian-American experience”, anti-Asian racism, the fetishization of the Asian woman, and reality. In this movement, we disentangle our bodies from identity.

The Craft @ Governors Island: June 13th is just a few more days away! Our next artist spotlight goes to Nicole Colbert who will be showcasing her work entitled, “Disruptions & Continuities,” performed by Danielle Alvarez, Fumihiro Kikuchi & Efrén Olson-Sanchez.

Disruptions & Continuities explores the idea of how disruptions caused by the elements (water, earth, air and fire), depending on their activity (e.g. earthquakes, forest fires, tornadoes) can disrupt our lives & our quest for continuities.

The Craft is looking forward to this Sunday’s afternoon of performances, and we are especially looking forward to showcasing work from Tamika Daniels, who will be presenting her solo piece entitled “When All Have Gone, Grief Remains.”

(Movement Artist) Tamika Daniels, a Queens, NY, native, received her B.A. in Dance from CUNY Queens College.

Far too many mothers are burying their children at the hands of those who took an oath to “Protect and Serve.” Mothers, whom we otherwise wouldn’t recognize, would trade their household name for their child’s life in a heartbeat. People, strangers, rally to their side in an outcry, to chant for justice. Family and friends gather to console and mourn and grieve. “But when the lights go off, and the cameras are gone and your family is gone, your friends are gone and it’s just you, you’re gonna have to learn how to deal with it. You’re gonna have to learn how to come back, from your deep depression, your sadness, your disappointment…and just not having your child.” - Sybrina Fulton (Mother of Trayvon Martin); Interview: Their Painful Bond: Black Mother Speak Out Together on Their Unimaginable Loss. As a mother, more specifically a black mother, I feel their pain and can only imagine the immensity of their grief.

We are so excited to be showcasing live work again and are especially looking forward to introducing Rachel Calabrese and Sawyer Newsome of Newbrese Dance this week, who will be showcasing their duet entitled “WaveLength.”

Newbrese Dance is an emerging physical contemporary performance project created by dancers Rachel Calabrese and Sawyer Newsome. Rachel and Sawyer both graduated from Mason Gross School of the Arts at Rutgers University in May 2020, receiving a BFA in Dance. They both have a love for the physicality of movement and how its momentum can be the driving force behind each impulse. This piece dives into the intimacy of relationships and how it often turns monotonous. How can one keep that raw feeling of excitement alive whilst still having the comfort of routine and ritual?

It is officially show week at Governors Island, and we absolutely cannot wait to introduce our June 13th artists! First up is Paige Cowen, who will be showcasing her solo work entitled “piece of a whole.”

"piece of a whole" is part of a larger work in progress that grapples with the implications of capitalist ideologies, specifically in reference to how they impact the body. This portion of the work holds up a mirror to the wreckage left behind the wake of the past 15 months–– give or take.  Previous research performances for the larger work have cracked open other themes such as the definition of "productivity" and the meaning of "success."

The Craft: May 6th is TOMORROW NIGHT! Our final artist spotlight goes to Roni Uzan, who will be showcasing her video work entitled THE MAZE, in collaboration with videographer Yoram Aharony.

“We are caged in our own thoughts, running through loopholes only to find ourselves exactly where we started. The Covid 19 Pandemic had caused most of us artists in a complete shot down but we also had the opportunity long gone, to reflect on what we are doing and what is on the horizon. We lived our lives as independent artists constantly spurred to get the next role, chase money, recognition and fulfillment in an unstable reality. we are like lab rats running towards an unknown destination. The fear of being irrelevant had been augmented when the performance art world was completely obliterated with no nearing signs of return.”

The Craft: May 6th is just two days away! Our next artist spotlight goes to Aika Takeshima + Sara Pizzi, who will be showcasing their live work entitled BLOCKS.

"BLOCKS is a new kind of online live performance named - Joining Style Performance -. It premiered on February 26th, 2021. We wanted to break the ordinary idea of performance transforming it in an interactive place to share and discuss concepts together. The performance was created for and with the audience. We improvised movement and words rotating around the concept of the children blocks game. We reacted to everything happening around us and the audience. We let the audience, thoughts, dance, events guide us. This time we are going to present a short version of the original concept.”

It’s officially show week and we cannot wait to introduce our next artist, Olga Rabetskaya, who will be showcasing her video work entitled , created in collaboration with Anna Gichan + Carlos Cardona.

is a cinematic short dance film created in direct response to the falsified 2020 elections of Belarus. My hope is that through this film I can show that Belarus's spirit is strong. The colors are Belarus's colors, the posters allude to the protesters standing up for our rights and women as the lead attest to the special women led protests on Saturdays. This film stands in solidarity with those who are fighting for their rights, everywhere.

We cannot wait for The Craft: May 6th next week, and we are especially looking forward to welcoming back Kathleen Clark who will be showcasing her work entitled FIND LIGHT.

"FIND LIGHT was born from a long, dark winter spent isolating in a new apartment in Portland, Maine. The work is a celebration of spring--embodying its natural undercurrents of newness, fertility and growth. The intentional, pose-based, movement allows both the dancer and viewer to linger on the simple presence of light in a room, on a wall and on a body.

This piece was first conceived and shared as a series of clips on Instagram. The video in full, with all its subtle shifts and adjustments, encourages the viewer to stay mindful and to value the work as much as the pose."

The Craft: May 6th is next week and we are looking forward to welcoming back Sean Thomas Boyt of stb x at who will be showcasing their live work in collaboration with Dr. Andy Thierauf entitled, Keeping on.

Sean Thomas Boyt and Dr. Andy Thierauf  have been cross-disciplinary collaborators for the past eight years, creating work that spans a variety of genres by using dance and percussion as mediums for engaging performance art.  Incorporating electronics, improvisation, text, and physical theater, the “dance/perc” duo is constantly experimenting and producing material while refining their practices individually.

"Keeping on" is a Zoom-based work that allows the audience to experience the production of the dance. Processed through the virtual backdrop feature, the multi-cam performance can be experienced in several parts: a portable screen dance, a bedroom improvisation, or an amalgamation of fixed and live performance. Situating itself within the isolation of the past year, "Keeping on" is a meditative, multilayered one-person disco stuck in an interior-focused world.
