Capicu Culture

Capicu Culture ¿Quien somos? We are a grassroots house of poetry and performing arts in New York City, formed in B Here is a rundown of some of our proudest moments.
(23)

Since 2007, Capicu has made it's presence known in NY by featuring both veteran as well as up and coming writers, prominent visual artists, entrepreneurs, comedians and musical acts. We're a partnership between the cutting edge event coordinator Juan PaPo Santiago and established online entity SofritoForYourSoul.com, also supported by some of NYC's most powerful artists & musicians including some

of the elders from the Nuyorican movement. We welcome all styles and poets, though our showcase is themed around our Nuyorican origins. We a develop open mic and featured artists events all across NYC and Long Island. We also have a bi-weekly online radio show for the global community, here you can listen to some of our archived shows: http://www.blogtalkradio.com/radiocapicu. Our mantra is that we educate & entertain, in order to culturally enrich and empower our neighborhoods. Opening night, March 2007. An audience of near 200, with over 20 open mic poets in a 3 hour event at Area51 Lounge in brooklyn, a venue that had never seen poetry in its space before. In December 2007 and December 2008, we developed the Pa’L Pueblo Toy Drive, which helped bring toys to over 100 children at a Bushwick United Headstart school. Here, we also formed a lasting relationship with world class artisans Taino Spirit, whose work you may see featured at the Museum of Natural History, the United Nations, and as the featured artists for Comite Noviembre 2008. In February 2008, we brought legendary author Piri Thomas (of Down These Mean Streets) to our venue for the people of Brooklyn. Selected poets paid homage to Piri for his lifes work. In March 2008, we brought Ernesto Quiñones who read a passage from his critically acclaimed book, Bodega Dreams. In October 2008, we had the honor of featuring Jesus Papoleto Melendez, best friend of the late Pedro Pietri and one of the founding fathers of the Nuyorican Movement. Later that month, in collaboration with Phi Iota Alpha Latino Fraternity we also featured Chi-town spoken word phenomenon Mayda Del Valle at Long Island University. In November 2008, we coordinated the E=MCSquared charity event featuring rising stars of spoken word and comedy for Orphans International World Wide, to benefit their project in formation in the Dominican Republic. Pulitzer Prize winning author Junot Díaz contributed a message of hope to the children of Azua in the Dominican Republic, the community of Washington Heights and Dominicans around the world. Capicu Poetry has been featured on an opening segment of HITN TV's Dialogo De Costa en Costa with Malin Falu in 2007, Latin Beat Magazine (May 07 Edition)

Our visitors have come from as far out as California to perform or catch our shows.. Come see why! We've been reaching out to all spoken word poets across the nation (established and on the rise), College students and many others we thought would like to lend support. Artists/ General Contact:

Ashley M. Jones’ journey to becoming the first Black Poet Laureate of the State of Alabama began in the second grade. Her teacher gave her the assignment to find a piece of media to memorize and recite for the class. An avid reader from an art-loving family, it wasn’t difficult for Jones to find something to perform.

¿Quiénes somos?

For over a decade, Capicu has made it's presence known in New York by featuring veteran as well as up and coming performers of spoken word/ slam poetry, prominent visual artists, up and coming entrepreneurs, comedians and musical guests. Capicu was inspired by the philosophies of the most progressive intellectual and artistic movements of the last century (i.e. The Harlem Renaissance, the Beat Poets, Black Arts Movement & most notably the Nuyorican Movement).

Capicu Cultural Showcase began as a partnership between two award- winning social media innovators, each with over a decade of experience in community building: Creative Director Juan “PaPo Swiggity” Santiago and Social Media Cultural Curator, George “Urban Jibaro” Torres. The community we built of advisors and artists is known as #TeamCapicu and they are driving forces behind New York City’s arts realm. Among them are Jessica ‘Fifa’ Arocho, Albert ‘TainoImage’ Areizaga, Lisa ‘Boricua Goddess’ Centeno, author Jani Rose, author Rich Villar, Jennifer Vanessa, Sue Reyes, Eric ‘DJ Cocotaso’ Ocasio, and the late author Keith Roach.

Our popular monthly “People’s Open Mic” series has also become a rite of passage for anyone looking to step into the realm of of cultural expression in New York City as our stage and audience welcomes newcomers during every show. Each showcase attracts internationally renown artists as well as up and coming talent. It is also supported by many of NYC’s local artistic community. Although inspired by themes and artists who emerged in the Nuyorican Poetry movement, all styles of performances from diverse cultures are showcased. We have featured acclaimed authors and poets such as Piri Thomas (Poet & Author of “Down these Mean Streets”), Ernesto Quinones (Author of “Bodega Dreams”), Felipe Luciano (original member of The Last Poets, 1st Chairman of the Young Lords Party), Lemon Anderson (Tony- Award winning Playwright, Poet & Actor), Willie Perdomo (award winning Poet & children’s book author), Mayda Del Valle (National Poetry Slam Champion recently performed at the White House Poetry Jam), Hebrew Mamita (nationally recognized Poet, Playwright & Actress) Flaco Navaja (nationally recognized Poet, Actor & Singer), and Bonafide Rojas (Poet, Author & Musician), among others.

The aim of the showcase is to provide a culturally diverse exhibit of artistic expression combining elements of spoken word, visual art, dance, music and community. We also utilize the principles of Edutainment to culturally enrich and empower our communities through our involvement with programs such as the American Diabetes Association’s Feria De Salud health initiative, the CASA Ana Orphanage Project in the Dominican Republic, the National Puerto Rican Day Parade, and local initiatives like our “Pa’l Pueblo” Holiday Drives and the Coalition For The Homeless. Our visitors have come from around the world to perform or catch our shows. Come see why!
