Women at NJPAC

Women at NJPAC A Sisterhood for Good. Women@NJPAC are change makers, rabble-rousers, artists, moms, bosses - women

From the first proposal to build a world-class performing arts center in the heart of Downtown Newark, NJPAC has been the focus of great hope, inspiration, and excitement! The Women's Association of NJPAC was formed to build support for this cultural treasure and engage women throughout the state to share the vision, artistry, and diversity that have made our world-class performing arts center nationally acclaimed.

“There is always something to do. There are hungry people to feed, naked people to clothe, sick people to comfort and make well. And while I don’t expect you to save the world, I do think it’s not asking too much for you to love those with whom you sleep, share the happiness of those whom you call friend, engage those among you who are visionary and remove from your life those who offer you depression, despair and disrespect.”
- Nikki Giovanni

NJPAC mourn the passing of the extraordinary poet, activist and professor Nikki Giovanni, beloved for works that fiercely celebrated Black life and for decades of performances that married spoken word poetry with jazz and gospel. She was 81.

Nikki, who appeared at the Arts Center many times (including virtually during the pandemic), believed strongly that her words had the power to be a catalyst for change and were strongest delivered aloud. As recently as this October she appeared here during the Dodge Poetry Festival, performing alongside Javon Jackson and Christian McBride. During her long career, she published children’s books as well as poetry, taught at Rutgers University, Queens College and Virginia Tech, made numerous television appearances (including a two-hour interview of James Baldwin) and toured the country repeatedly as both a performer and lecturer. Her final publication, titled The Last Book, is due to be published next year.
