The Spruces Hudson Valley "Elegance in Leisure”

Camped out here in the Hudson Valley, just one hour up river from New York City, The Spruces is a diverse team of elegant weirdos working hard to transform a centuries-old country estate into a New American Clubhouse for Leisure & Community Arts.

The Spruces sits on a rustic and secluded five acres in the Great American City of Newburgh, NY. With a little red barn and a little yellow farmhouse,

tucked back amidst sprawling lawns, stone walls, mossy boulders, and old-growth character, we might be the perfect place for...

leaves are a little behind last year’s color just yet
but the unmistakeable air has arrived, crisp and clear
and the sun is taking that shallower approach that eases the days’ warmth but preserves the rays warmth.

Early August 2021 tour of the Tomato Patch. One of the wettest early summers on record has left Hudson Valley veggies crying out for some dry air and sunshine, but the rains have tapered and the garden is now a daily harvest party.

We have to pour on the love while it lasts!

Damn spring is a hoot. Every day it’s like someone is here painting a bit more color into the landscape. A bit more color. A bit more color. Happy little blossom here. Goofy little bud there. And that person I think we all know is Bob Ross, RIP, haha. But seriously he was awesome. Anyway, yeah, how lucky we are that for plants, the byproduct of the fight for life, is all this beauty. Like these plants are competing in an age old contest for the affection of wildlife to satisfy their mutual needs, and we’re the damn audience to all this tasty color, hopefully also doing right by nature in the meantime, although not exactly how nature intended! Damn I mean a habanero’s hot and orange specifically because it doesn’t want to be eaten, and we come along and we’re like damn that’s so tangy, smoky, sweet, brite, and adds so much depth to this dish, dang messing up its whole strategy until...but then because we like it we grow it, so it gets to keep on living which is what it wanted all along. what was I saying? sheesh, I’m rambling again...

Visions of Johanna, Johanna Deere. She’s freshly adorned with the new snow blade, and now we wait and see if Mother Nature’s Nor’easter comes through for us. I sure hope we get a lot of snow for Johanna’s sake. Much like a race horse, once she’s saddled she wants to run!
