Morning Reflections: Canada Geese in the Wild
Branta canadensis
Captured in Arizona, these two Canada Geese pause in tranquil morning light—one standing in the shallows, the other drifting nearby, both mirrored perfectly on the still water.
Canada Geese are one of North America's most recognizable waterfowl. Once in steep decline, their populations have rebounded impressively due to conservation efforts and adaptability to urban and suburban environments. Today, they are found in every U.S. state and across much of Canada year-round.
While often seen as a common species, their behavior—especially during breeding and migration—makes them a favorite among birders. Watch for their distinctive V-shaped flight patterns in spring and fall, and their strong pair bonds, which can last for life.
Did you know?
The resident population of Canada Geese in the U.S. has grown from less than 500,000 in the 1970s to over 5 million today, according to the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service.
Birding Tip:
Canada Geese are often found near ponds, lakes, rivers, and open fields. Early morning and late afternoon offer the best light for photography and calm conditions for water reflections like this one.
