So often we are asked about the property, the barn and how it all became a brewery. We want to share all of that with our customers and followers, so yesterday we created albums which show the development of the hop fields and the transformation of the barn into the brewery. Today, we want to share with you the story of how the hop fields led to a partnership that led to the brewery that you all support!
Denny and Wendy Browne purchased the property we know as River Bend Hop Farm and Brewery in 2015 as a place to get away with their family, grow a garden and plant a hop field. They decided to immediately begin building the hop field that now greets you at the entrance to River Bend. They gathered up every friend that was willing to take on this task. Quite a few people came out to help, but only one man, Tom Beers, showed up on the second day, helped with the entire project and, seemingly, never left.
As the year went on, Denny and his wife Wendy along with Tom and his wife, Melissa, spent more and more time together on the farm working and enjoying the property with their families. Denny and Tom started experimenting with beer making. They felt they were making some good brews so they invited friends and family up to the farm for a party and to try their concoctions. While those first attempts at beer making may not have been super successful (according to their friends and family) it ignited a fire in both to keep trying. The men researched and trialed beer-making techniques and recipes in an effort to perfect their beer.
At some point, Denny and Tom along with their wives, Wendy and Melissa, started discussing the possibility of renovating the barn on the land and transforming it into a brewery. I believe there has been some mention that there was a little too much drinking involved that night. Whether that is the case or not, once the decision was made to open a brewery, the two couples moved forward and never turned back. The renovation of the barn began in the summer/fall of 2016. You can see by the photos that were posted yesterday that it was quite the undertaking. Undoubtedly this was a labor of love that produced a lot of blood, sweat and tears. The couples hired a ‘real’ brewer who was able to take some of the ‘flagship’ beers Denny and Tom created and made them even better. A couple of these would be the Browne Ale and Hefeweizen that you’ll find are staples on our tap menu.
