The Grange became a recording studio for a song that honors the legacy of Bert Steele. Bert passed away last August and in December 2023 a bench surrounded by engraved flagstones with Bert's philosophical words was placed just outside the Niwot Market as a memorial and peaceful spot to sit, think, and remember Bert.
Kevin Dooley wrote a beautiful song he performed at the dedication ceremony to unveil the bench. As he sang, the community joined in on the chorus singing "Be More Like Bert."
The song was so well-received that Dooley decided to preserve it for the community. Reaching out to sound engineer James Tuttle, keyboardist Michael Tomich, fiddler Oliver Jacobson, bassist Chris Engelman, mandolin player Steve Mullins, and singer Jeanne McAdara, Dooley assembled this group of professional performers who were all in for the music and for the mission. The afternoon of the recording was the first time they all performed together as a band.
Members of the Steele family and other folks from the community arrived at the Grange later in the day to sing their part – the chorus of the song.
Renowned musician Pete Wernick added his talents playing banjo and lap steel guitar during the remastering process.

The Grange hosted Kevin Dooley and friends James Tuttle (sound engineer), Michael Tomich (keyboard and harmony), Jeanne McAdara (harmony), Chris Engleman (bass), Oliver Jacobson (fiddle), and Steve Mullins (mandolin) as they recorded Dooley’s song “Be More Like Bert” written in honor of much admired and loved community member Bert Steele.
