Last Sunday, April 30th, was the day that marked the official end to the Vietnam War in 1975. Check out the incredible accounts from Ex-POWs of the "Hanoi Hilton" at the link below. We were lucky enough to work with retired rear admiral Bob Shumaker on a Golden Eagles reunion, who spent an unthinkable 8 years and 1 day as a POW. He was shot down and taken prisoner in 1965.
2025 will mark the 50th anniversary of the end of the Vietnam War, start planning your reunions now!
Most of today's reunion-goers are veterans of the Vietnam War, America's second longest conflict after Afghanistan. Nearly 3 million Americans served in Vietnam over nearly 20 years, but the welcome they received when returning home was anything but friendly and appreciative like you see today. That's why in 2017 lawmakers created - to finally show the appreciation these veterans deserve.

Happy National Medal of Honor Day! It's amazing the people you meet when planning reunions for veterans of major conflicts and battles. Here's our founder Ted Dey with the famous Woody Williams at Iwo Jima Association of America's 70th Anniversary Reunion a few years ago. Woody has since passed on, but leaves behind a legacy carried on by many other recipients of America's highest military honor.

Today (3/9) in 1862 the Battle of Hampton Roads is fought between the ironclads USS Monitor and CSS Virginia. While neither ship is disabled the Union blockade is maintained. Monitor is a museum ship you can visit at the The Mariners' Museum and Park in Newport News, VA.

Over the last 10 years we have been very fortunate to get to know some of the veterans of The Battle of Iwo Jima through planning annual reunions for Iwo Jima Association of America. Their stories and sacrifice are incredible, and they won't be around forever. It's important to hear not only their stories, but also the stories of their brothers that didn't come home. There was no shortage of valor and selfless acts of heroism.

The power of reunions! Another wonderful story of an improbable reconnection at a unit reunion. If you've ever been on the fence about attending your unit's reunion, this is about as much motivation as you can get. You just never know who you'll see there.
An iconic 1968 photo taken by Stars and Stripes photographer John Olson of a wounded Marine helped turn U.S. public opinion against the Vietnam War. It also sparked an unlikely reunion 54 years later.

81 years ago today Japan woke the sleeping giant by attacking and killing 2,403 Americans. Like the 9/11 terrorist attacks, this mobilized a generation (the greatest generation) of Americans to put their personal lives aside and risk everything in the name of Freedom.

A harsh reality of military service is that not everyone comes home. All return with wounds you can't see, some with wounds you can't miss, and some come home in a box. Then there are those that didn't make it home at all. Today we honor those men and women Missing in Action. They are gone but they will never be forgotten.

Listen to this amazing story about Navajo Code Talkers on Iwo Jima. Their role in the Pacific has largely been forgotten, but they played a key role many American victories.

This day is reserved for those that answered a higher calling, put themselves in harms way, and now bear the scars of combat. That takes a special kind of courage and selflessness, they deserve a special thanks today!

Everything revolves around the water and the maritime industry when you live in a coastal port city like Norfolk. We're extremely lucky to have the men and women of the U.S. Coast Guard keeping professional and leisure mariners safe, and protecting the farthest corners of our border.
Happy Birthday to the U.S. Coast Guard!

A fond farewell to Hershel “Woody” Williams, America’s last living Medal of Honor Recipient of WWII, who passed away today at the age of 98. Woody earned the MOH for his actions above and beyond the call of duty during the Battle of Iwo Jima. Woody’s citation states that “he fought desperately for four hours under terrific enemy small-arms fire and repeatedly returned to his own lines to prepare demolition charges and obtain serviced flamethrowers,” before wiping out one enemy position after another. We came to know Woody at the national Iwo Jima Association of America reunions, which AFR has planned for over ten years. Not only a hero on the battlefield, Woody worked tirelessly for Gold Star Families and was just a gentle, kind-hearted person. Woody’s other great honor in life occurred in Norfolk, VA on March 7, 2020 when the U.S. Navy commissioned its newest Expeditionary Sea Base the USNS Hershel "Woody" Williams (ESB 4). Here’s a salute to a life well lived, and to a man of courage and conviction who will never be forgotten.

June has been PTS Awareness Month, and today is National PTS Day. There is no 'D' because calling it a 'disorder' is unfair to the men and women that made sacrifices they now carry the burden of. Any human that experiences what our servicemembers did in the Middle East or any conflict before it would go through the same.
Military Reunions play such a vital role in the reintegration process and overcoming PTS. If you're suffering the best thing you can do is get connected with those that went through it by your side.
