People often ask us how we started @kippotworld : Our family has been in the Panama hat business for the past 80 years. It all started with a great uncle that had a Panama Hat in Germany, and luckily was able to escape from the nazis and find his freedom in Cuenca, Ecuador. He brought my father in law Kurt to Cuenca and soon after he married Ilse, a nice Jewish girl. They raised their 5 children in a community with no Jews. In fact, the synagogue was closed the day after my husband’s Bar Mitzvah. About 20 years ago, my father in law made a Kippah for my nephew’s Bar Mitzvah in Quito, then my other nephew in Bogota, then my cousin in Miami and then his cousin in LA. People started calling my husband at his business to do kippot for their events, but it was hard to dedicate the time to talk about the color of the trim or what weave to choose or small details when this was not his real business, so I took over the business, starting only with the straw kippot and little by little added more materials and products.
