Storing Your Golf Clubs Properly
Is this Your Garage?

So it looks like golf season is over and it is time to put your clubs away for the winter. Remember your golf clubs are your "good friends" and you want to take care of them. They spent time with you this summer and you had some fun together. But now the holidays are here, it's too cold to play and that trip to Florida isn't until February. So what are you going to do with your clubs?

Jonathan Wall of golf.com has written a great article on caring for your clubs and he definitely advises against your car trunk. Besides possibly getting stolen, one of the worst things for your clubs, in particular for the grips, is moisture. And for some clubs, rust can happen without proper care. Don’t worry about the epoxy that keeps your club heads attached to the shaft, the resin used is meant to withstand extreme temperature changes.

Find a place where you can store “your buddies” during the winter season that doesn’t go through extreme temperature swings such as a free spot INDOORS like a closet or the corner of your den or office. Doing this one little thing will really extend the life of your clubs. And yes, they can be stored either horizontally or vertically.

When you get a chance, take inventory of your gear and accessories. Clean, replenish and be ready for 2021 with balls, tees, gloves, sunscreen, etc. Notice a funny smell coming from your bag? Maybe it’s an old banana at the bottom of your bag. And maybe you will find your favorite ball marker that’s been missing.

As you are looking at your clubs, check out your iron grooves. Do you need to remove the dirt or give them a good cleaning before golf season? Maybe this is a good time to re-grip your clubs or be fitted for new ones at our pro shop while you have some time. And don’t forget to check out the soft spikes on your shoes as they probably need to be replaced. We can help with that also.

Do all this now and you will be ready when you receive our much-awaited eblast about the course opening.

Wishing you and your family a happy and safe Thanksgiving.

All About Golf Balls

As you are putting your golf equipment away for the winter, you may want to check out this interesting article from David Dusek of golfweek.com. He claims in his article that no piece of golf equipment can have a more profound effect on your game than the golf ball you play. Keep this in mind for 2025. Your golf ball really can make a difference in your game as golf ball companies can change how they fly, spin and behave on course. And finding the ball that suits your game is critical to your success as Tour Players will profess.

Lower handicappers can really feel the difference between golf balls. Not so much with the higher handicappers except when it comes to price! David has put together a great piece to help you understand more about golf balls so read on.

Here are the rules from the USGA and the R&A pertaining to golf balls that manufacturers must conform to:

* The diameter of the ball must not be less than 1.68 inches.

* The weight of the ball must not be greater than 1.62 ounces.

* The ball must be spherically symmetrical.

* The ball may not exceed a maximum initial velocity limit of 250 feet per second (170.5 mph) and it must stay below an overall distance standard that combines carry distance and roll of 320 yards.

As a note, a player may not deliberately alter a golf ball (scratch, scuff or cut it). A player is encouraged to make a special mark with a felt-tip so it can be more easily identified.

There are no regulations limiting how a player may mark the ball as long as the original manufacturer’s markings can be discerned. Nearly every ball sold has a number on it though there is no rule stipulating that it has to have one. Some companies have added fun characters to their balls, and of course, corporate logos, fun images, photos, etc. have been added for promotional use.

Modern golf balls are all “solid core”, meaning there is a large rubber core inside the ball. They became especially popular in 2000 when Titleist introduced the original Pro V1. The core is made mostly of a synthetic polymer rubber material. The more resilient the core is, the higher the energy return (ball speed) when a force is applied to it. Two-piece balls are then given a cover that is made from Surlyn or other ionomer. They are then painted and numbers and logos are applied. A clearcoat is then sprayed over them.

A three-piece golf ball has a casing layer, referred to as a mantle that is added over the core and before the cover is put on the ball. A four-piece ball has a dual-core where a smaller core is encased in a larger one, followed by the mantle and then the cover. A four-piece ball could also have one core and two mantles and a cover. TaylorMade does offer a five-piece ball with one core, three mantles and a cover.

The truth is here — colored balls do not perform any differently than white balls as it has been repeatedly tested. Colored balls are strictly a cosmetic difference and may offer visibility advantages. Colored balls stand out in low-light situations. Some players feel that it is easier to focus on the ball during the swing if it is colored. Yellow is the preferred choice as shown by Peter Malnati who won the Valspar in 2024.

Now the performance part - high and low spin. A tee shot applies a large amount of impact to a ball. The ball compresses and rebounds effectively, resulting in a lower spin. Shots around the green involve less force, so spin is largely influenced by the ball’s surface. A soft urethane cover easily gets into the grooves of the wedge thus increasing spin. The dimples on the ball help to improve its aerodynamics and give your shot lift, but nearly all of the energy from your swing creates forward thrust for more distance instead of creating spin. The amount of spin you can generate can vary significantly based on the ball's cover material. Balls with ionomer covers tend to have lower spin than softer urethane covers, which have more spin.

So are the higher-priced balls worth it? Softer urethane-covered balls cost more than the ionomer-covered balls. So if you are really serious about your game the higher-priced balls are worth it. Go see for yourself by testing different golf balls and see what is right for your game, especially around the greens. If you can do so, try them with a launch monitor to get real-time feedback. You should be able to see and feel which ball is best for your game.

Charlie Parsons at theleftrough.com contends that there are 7 “must have” shots if you want to be more consistent on the course.

With virtually golf season over, it is now a good time to look back and review what you might improve upon for 2025. Nothing like getting a jump start on your game.

Charlie has found after playing for several decades that all good golfers have these seven shots in common. With these shots you can play well at nearly any course and in all types of weather conditions. Once you have them “in your bag”, you start playing to your potential faster than ever. These will come as no surprise.

How many do you have on automatic and how many do you need to practice more?

1. STOCK DRIVE — You must learn to have a dependable drive. If you are consistently using a three wood of the tee you are making it far harder on yourself. Face it. Better players hit it longer off the tee. Today’s drivers with their new technology have never been easier to hit. Get fitted for the right driver.

2. FAIRWAY FINDER — This is the shot you can rely on to find the short grass and stay out of trouble. And yes, it can be your driver. The longer you hit off the tee, the easier it is to score lower since you have a shorter distance to the green.

3. KNOCKDOWN IRON SHOT — This is the shot that Tour Players use when it is windy. Because it is flighted lower and has less spin, it is more consistent and straighter than a normal iron shot. Choke up on the grip which leads to better contact and a more solid shot. Great in windy conditions. Don’t confuse this with a punch shot which is much lower and shorter and is usually a recovery shot.

4. FAIRWAY BUNKER SHOT - Pick the right targets off the tee to avoid these at all costs since they are a low percentage shot. Better the rough than this.

5. GREENSIDE BUNKER SHOT - But of course. Greenside bunkers are part of the game so be confident when you walk in the sand. This one you can practice over and over so have a pre-shot routine which will give you the mindset that you need.

6. BUMP AND RUN — This shot is a very simple motion and has a low speed compared to a full swing shot. It is very similar to a putting stroke but just done with a wedge or short iron. The goal is to get the ball on the green as fast as possible and get it rolling like a putt. You are not trying to create backspin or have much wrist action. Learn to putt from the fringe also.

7. PITCH SHOT — This is a must also. It’s more challenging than a bump and run but a lot easier to hit than a flop shot. Use this shot when you don’t have enough room to hit a lower, bump and run shot. Use a sand or a lob wedge.

It’s easy to get caught up in all kinds of crazy shots, but the truth is that you want to keep it as simple as possible. Don’t make it harder by going for the low percentage shot or being overly aggressive when you are in trouble. Practice the seven shots above if you want to break 80 or be a single digit golfer. Master the basics.

Gamesmanship

Most golfers enjoy some type of competition whether it is against other players or against themselves when they tee it up. A wager often makes the golf game a little more fun and heightens the anticipation of the day.

So how well do you handle competition? Are you a head case when the going gets tough? Do you have a meltdown and totally lose your game when the pressure arises? Sadly, loss of composure and focus is what keeps most really good golfers from being great. And probably the big difference is why many accomplished players don’t advance onto the tour.

A great player has to have a head game also. Suzann Peterson gave golfdigest.com the following seven easy-to-implement tips to stay in the game.

1) Know your strengths – Think about the best part of your game and how they might give you an edge, then use it.

2) Wear out your opponent – Do so by being consistent. Stay steady, take your time, and don’t take stupid chances.

3) Be ready to adjust – If you are playing someone who is playing really well, the safe and steady strategy might not be working. Find ways to be more aggressive. Changing the strategy can swing the momentum your way.

4) Expect your opponent to make everything – If you are up by a couple of holes and feeling comfortable, snap out of it. Your opponent will rally so keep playing your hardest.

5) When in doubt, go with the safe shot – It’s better to make no mistakes than to risk too much. Don’t play over your head. Hero golf is overrated; go for the lower-risk, higher-percentage shot.

6) Don’t ever get ahead of yourself – Being up in a match and calculating where it will end has ruined many a match. Focus on the present, one shot at a time, and keep the pressure on. This is a key point. Forget any past shots and certainly don’t start projecting into the future. In other words, don’t count your chickens until they have hatched.

7) Prepare for anything – As long as there are holes left, there are opportunities for you and also for your opponent. Just keep grinding, like the match is on the line because it is.

Besides a great physical game, a player has to have a mental one too.

You can get a real edge on your opponent by incorporating (and mastering) the mental swing thoughts above now even if the golf season is ending. These tips will put you one step ahead when golf resumes next year.

When It IS Acceptable to Walk Off the Course

If you watched Rory on his final holes earlier this year at the U.S. Open at Pinehurst then you probably got the feeling that he would love to just "disappear" as he was incredibly disappointed. It was further evidenced by his not giving a press conference following play.

Golf is supposed to be an enjoyable time and hey, while a bad day on the course is better than a bad day at the office, sometimes, under certain circumstances, you are better off just walking away. Were there times this year you just wanted to "disappear" so to speak?

Even when the playing is great, there are times for safety reasons like lightning when one needs to come off the course no matter what. Or an emergency if someone becomes seriously ill or an emergency at home. But what are a few other legitimate excuses when one needs to exit the scene?

Golf is a game of perseverance and grit and no one likes a quitter. Having a temper tantrum is not a reason to get off the course. Get tough and keep plugging away. Try to find a positive (or two) like enjoying nature or being with your friends. We have all had bad days. Days like this can often teach us a lesson or two if we are open to it.

However, check out the following 5 other reasons when it just might be a good idea that Christopher Powers of Golf Digest has gathered:

1. Glacial pace of play (we are talking 3+ hours for the front nine)

2. Case of the shanks (not just one or two, but something terribly gone wrong)

3. Terrible playing partners (better than a fight on course)

4. Causing irreparable damage to your psyche (somewhat like shanks but there could be other issues

5. Running out of balls (self-explanatory)

Nine is Just Fine!

With the shorter days and cooler temps, 18 holes might not be practical for you. Nowadays it is cool to play 9-holes and there is no longer a stigma about doing so. Heck, some golf is better than no golf at all especially with winter right around the corner.

Nine is a great alternative if you are:

* really cold (or hot in the summer) towards the end of your round,

* pressed for time,

* learning the game,

* wanting a little on-course practice,

* introducing a newbie or a child to the game,

* recovering from a physical ailment,

Join the millions who are enjoying 9 holes instead of 18.

Here are some other reasons from David Chmiel of the USGA on why it’s always a great time to play nine:

1. Nine-hole golf has an impeccable pedigree. The First U.S. Open in 1895 was played on a nine-hole course: Newport (R.I.) Golf Club.

2. 90% percent of U.S. golf facilities offer nine-hole rates.

3. It’s an excellent way to start (or finish) the day. Grab friends and co-workers for a pre- or post-work round to alleviate stress.

4. It’s a wonderful way to learn the game if you are starting out. You can more comfortably develop your game and learn rules and etiquette without the stress and time commitment of 18 holes.

5. You can do it forever. Golf is a game for a lifetime.

6. Your nine-hole round is legit! You can post a nine-hole score to maintain your USGA Handicap Index. Click here https://www.usga.org/content/usga/home-page/handicapping/world-handicap-system/whs-articles/only-time-for-nine-you-can-still-post-your-score-21474870775.html?utm_source=newsletter_383&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=nine-is-just-fine to find out how to do so.

So, next time you don’t have time for 18, join us for 9!
