Remembering Arnold Palmer

Other than Tiger Woods, arguably Arnold Palmer was one of the most popular players of all time. He was born September 10, 1929, and was one of the most popular golfers ever. He is considered to be the most charismatic of all golfers and liked by almost all who knew him.

We would like to celebrate Arnie’s memory during his birth month with 10 of his best quotes cited by Golf Monthly. They are funny, truthful and thought-provoking. Enjoy!

1) “Golf is deceptively simple and endlessly complicated; it satisfies the soul and frustrates the intellect. It is at the same time rewarding and maddening – and it is without a doubt the greatest game mankind has ever invented.”

2) “You can argue about major championships and whether Tiger will surpass Jack’s 18 majors but what can’t be argued is this: Tiger Woods is the most dominant, most skilled player we’ve ever seen.”

3) “Concentration comes out of a combination of confidence and hunger.”

4) “I have a tip that can take five strokes off anyone’s golf game: it’s called an eraser.”

5) “Success in golf depends less on strength of body than upon strength of mind and character.”

6) “I never rooted against an opponent, but I never rooted for him either.”

7) “I’ve always made a total effort, even when the odds seemed entirely against me. I never quit trying; I never felt that I didn’t have a chance to win.”

8) “You must play boldly to win.”

9) “What do I mean by concentration? I mean focusing totally on the business at hand and commanding your body to do exactly what you want it to do.”

10) “The more I practice the luckier I get.”

Arnie's gigantic personality and charisma is missed.

8 Tips Golfers Forget in the Heat of the Battle

Katie Dawkins, a Golf Monthly Top 50 Coach, has 8 tips you need to remember when your round isn't going as well as you would like. This list centers around key areas that may be neglected in your preparation, practice and golf swing. Review the following and see what you need to be reminded about.

1. Golf grip pressure. It shouldn’t be too tight. As pressure mounts, tension naturally creeps into your grip. Hold it like a tube of toothpaste.

2. Golf swing; not a hit. One shouldn’t try to kill it as you lose rhythm and tempo.

3. Alignment. It’s the clubface and not the body that sets the alignment.

4. Appropriate shot. For example, around the green attempting a high-flighted flop shop, which is far riskier than a chip and run. Go for a higher percentage shot.

5. Posture. Have you slipped into a lazy position? Can you lift your heels and toes? Reset your weight onto the balls of your feet.

6. Sand shots. Strike the sand, not the ball. Hit the sand before the ball.

7. Smart plays. You aren’t a tour pro. Play for the middle of the green, not the daring pin placement.

8. Pre-shot routine. It’s something the best players in the world have; do you? Have a routine for each shot that assesses the lie, calculates the distance, and considers the conditions, selects the club and then visualizes the shot to be made. Then execute.

Review the following ideas and you might find some insight into lowering your score. Most amateur golfers are obsessed with hitting longer off the tee and if you are reading this article you too obviously want more distance. Look at the money we spend on drivers, balls and lessons to maximize our efforts!

The Complete Guide to Maximizing Your Driver article on practical-golf.com is a really comprehensive one by Jon Sherman. Below is the short version and of course you can click here https://practical-golf.com/maximizing-driver-distance?utm_source=newsletter_490&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=the-complete-guide-to-bombing-your-driver to read entire article.

First, there are a number of reasons why recreational golfers are lacking distance with their driver – swing speed, impact tendencies, equipment setup, and several other factors. If you want to maximize your distance, then your goal should be to increase your ball speed, launch it higher and reduce the amount of spin on the ball. (Easier said than done.)

No surprises here but here are the driving distance numbers by scoring average for the average player:

100 – 105 scoring average: 172 yards driving distance
90 – 95 scoring average: 193 yards driving distance
80 -- 85 scoring average: 217 yards driving distance
90 – 95 scoring average: 193 yards driving distance
72 or better scoring average: 251 yards driving distance

Here are some steps you can do without radically changing your swing:

1. Play the right driver – Most amateurs blindly select their driver off the rack without taking into consideration the shaft, the loft and driver head. Want more distance? Then get custom fit. You could easily add 20 – 30 yards if you aren’t hitting the right club.

2. Shorten the Shaft (yep, shorten the shaft.) -- All things being equal, a longer driver shaft will allow you to swing the club faster, which could add more distance. The problem for recreational golfers and even the pros, is that it makes it more challenging to find the center of the clubface with a longer shaft. So while you might be swinging it faster, your ball speed (and distance) could decrease because you are striking it all over the face of the club.

3. Improve your impact location (see #2 )-- By improving your strike efficiency, this is a way to add distance to your drives without adding any swing speed. The first thing you should do is find out where your impact tendencies are.

4. Hit up on the ball -- By learning how to hit up on the ball, or have a positive angle of attack, you will be able to launch the ball on the more optimal trajectory. Players can add as much as 20 yards to their drives by going from hitting down on the ball to hitting up on it. For certain golfers, it could be as simple as teeing it up higher and moving the ball further up in your stance.

5. Find the right tee height -- Your goal is to make impact in the center of the face, or slightly above it.

6. Swing faster (not harder) -- When most golfers try to add swing speed they are doing it all wrong. They just try to swing harder, which usually ruins their swing mechanics and results in injury. Getting stronger and more fit is one way to add swing speed the right way. Having a golf-specific workout can increase your strength, flexibility, and prevent injuries.

Trying one or two of these things may make a big difference. Have a plan and hit it straighter and further.
