Very cool entrance for Tiger as he was the last of the 6 players introduced last evening in his debut in the TGL.

However, not much went well thereafter as his Jupiter Links Golf Club (Tiger, Homa, and Kisner with Tom Kim sitting out.) was soundly defeated by Los Angeles Golf Club 12-1. (Rose, Morikawa, and Theegala with Fleetwood sitting out.)

And the play of the Jupiter team was very poor, especially so for Tiger and Kisner.

Breaking news! Our Course Rating and Slope Rating were recently updated by the United States Golf Association.

This is the first revision since we opened the course in 2000 and here we are celebrating 25 years! To get started, let's first look at what these ratings mean as defined by the USGA.

What is a Course Rating and What Does it Represent?

A Course Rating represents the score a scratch player, with a Handicap Index® of 0.0, should achieve on a golf course under normal course and weather conditions. For example, a Course Rating of 71.8 would equate to a scratch player’s expected score of 72 on a good round.

The Course Rating is determined by assessing the effective length of the golf course and the obstacles and challenges that face scratch players in their respective landing zones around the course.

What is a Slope Rating and What Does it Represent?

Slope Rating measures the relative difficulty of a golf course for players who are not scratch players compared to those who are scratch players. Playing length and obstacles impact higher-handicap players more than lower-handicap players, A course of standard difficulty has a Slope Rating of 113. The higher the rating, the more difficult the golf course.

Our course rates above the average for all courses rated by the United States Golf association for both its course rating and its slope rating for all tees except the RED for both men and women, but even these tees are very close to the average. See letters below.

Easy Resolutions that are Good Habits

New Year’s resolutions originated with the Babylonians over 4,000 years ago who made them to appease their gods and bring good fortune to their people. It’s interesting that only 12% of us truly keep the resolutions we do make. Maybe they are too lofty or too difficult to keep. Did you make any regarding your golf game this year? If you haven't, maybe you should. And if you did, they can be amended.

Mark Pazdur of Executive Golfer Magazine suggests several golf resolutions that are simple to do and do not require any money or significant time commitment. Start using these tips and you will lower your handicap this year. In fact, like our header says, make these a habit if you want to see improvement. Here they are:

1) Stop rushing to the first tee. Take time to get your game plan for your round together and warm up before you make that first swing.

2) Drink more water during your round. Hydration is crucial for maximum physical performance.

3) Adopt a consistent pre-shot routine. This is especially important when you are under pressure. A consistent routine will reduce your stress.

4) Practice more short putts. This is often where the round is made or lost. Putts of 5 feet or less are the score makers or score breakers. Practicing these regularly will build consistency with your touch and feel while putting and will help with the nerves.

5) Aim for the middle of more greens. Lower risk means fewer mistakes. Do not go for the hero shot unless you are fairly confident. Make sure you know the best place to miss the green to give you the best chance for an easy up and down. Do not short side yourself.

Now that was easy. Here's to more golf and lower scores this year.

A New & Exciting Golf Competition Begins Tomorrow

Are you in for the kick-off of the brainchild of Rory, Tiger, and sports executive, Mike McCarley tomorrow? The inaugural season of the TGL tees off indoors at The SoFi Center located in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, on Tuesday, January 7, with a match between the New York Golf Club (Fowler, Schauffele, Fitzpatrick) and the Bay Golf Club (Clark, Lowry, Aberg).

The SoFi Center comprises various technologies and covers an area of approximately 97 x 50 yards (roughly the size of a football field). The highlight is the massive screen players hit into. The 64x46-foot screen is approximately 20 times the size of a standard simulator. Players will hit to the screen from real grass tee boxes, fairway surfaces, rough, and sand (the same used at Augusta National) on long shots.

For shots within 50 yards or less to the green setup and hole locations, the players will transition to a custom-built complex (the “Green Zone”). This 3,800 square-foot green includes three 15 x 27-foot virtual greens, each equipped with 189 actuators and jacks that change the slope of the green to create a variety of play on every TGL hole.

There are 6 teams in the league, each with four golfers. Click here https://tglgolf.com/teams to see the names and members of each team. Each team will play five regular-season matches. Before each match, the two competing teams will name three competitors each. (One player from each team will sit each match.) Click here https://tglgolf.com/schedule for the schedule for the league.

Each TGL regular season match will be a 15-hole, 3-on-3 match featuring two distinct components. The first nine holes – "Triples" – will be played as a 3-on-3, alternate-shot match. The three players from each team alternate who tees off a hole, and then the three rotate who hits each shot from there.

The second six holes – "Singles" – will feature rotating head-to-head competition. Each player will play two holes during the session; Player 1 will play hole Nos. 10 and 13, Player 2 will play hole Nos. 11 and 14, and Player 3 will play hole Nos. 12 and 15. Each hole has a value of one point, and the team with the fewest strokes on a hole wins the point. Ties are worth zero points and there are no carryovers.

TGL will use a points-based system for regular-season matches, comparable to the National Hockey League’s standings structure.
2 points: Regulation win
2 points: Overtime win
1 point: Overtime loss
0 points: Regulation loss

All TGL matches will air on either ESPN or ESPN2 and simulcast on ESPN+ in two-hour, prime-time competition windows, beginning on January 7.

Storing Your Golf Clubs Properly
Is this Your Garage?

So it looks like golf season is over and it is time to put your clubs away for the winter. Remember your golf clubs are your "good friends" and you want to take care of them. They spent time with you this summer and you had some fun together. But now the holidays are here, it's too cold to play and that trip to Florida isn't until February. So what are you going to do with your clubs?

Jonathan Wall of golf.com has written a great article on caring for your clubs and he definitely advises against your car trunk. Besides possibly getting stolen, one of the worst things for your clubs, in particular for the grips, is moisture. And for some clubs, rust can happen without proper care. Don’t worry about the epoxy that keeps your club heads attached to the shaft, the resin used is meant to withstand extreme temperature changes.

Find a place where you can store “your buddies” during the winter season that doesn’t go through extreme temperature swings such as a free spot INDOORS like a closet or the corner of your den or office. Doing this one little thing will really extend the life of your clubs. And yes, they can be stored either horizontally or vertically.

When you get a chance, take inventory of your gear and accessories. Clean, replenish and be ready for 2021 with balls, tees, gloves, sunscreen, etc. Notice a funny smell coming from your bag? Maybe it’s an old banana at the bottom of your bag. And maybe you will find your favorite ball marker that’s been missing.

As you are looking at your clubs, check out your iron grooves. Do you need to remove the dirt or give them a good cleaning before golf season? Maybe this is a good time to re-grip your clubs or be fitted for new ones at our pro shop while you have some time. And don’t forget to check out the soft spikes on your shoes as they probably need to be replaced. We can help with that also.

Do all this now and you will be ready when you receive our much-awaited eblast about the course opening.

Wishing you and your family a happy and safe Thanksgiving.

All About Golf Balls

As you are putting your golf equipment away for the winter, you may want to check out this interesting article from David Dusek of golfweek.com. He claims in his article that no piece of golf equipment can have a more profound effect on your game than the golf ball you play. Keep this in mind for 2025. Your golf ball really can make a difference in your game as golf ball companies can change how they fly, spin and behave on course. And finding the ball that suits your game is critical to your success as Tour Players will profess.

Lower handicappers can really feel the difference between golf balls. Not so much with the higher handicappers except when it comes to price! David has put together a great piece to help you understand more about golf balls so read on.

Here are the rules from the USGA and the R&A pertaining to golf balls that manufacturers must conform to:

* The diameter of the ball must not be less than 1.68 inches.

* The weight of the ball must not be greater than 1.62 ounces.

* The ball must be spherically symmetrical.

* The ball may not exceed a maximum initial velocity limit of 250 feet per second (170.5 mph) and it must stay below an overall distance standard that combines carry distance and roll of 320 yards.

As a note, a player may not deliberately alter a golf ball (scratch, scuff or cut it). A player is encouraged to make a special mark with a felt-tip so it can be more easily identified.

There are no regulations limiting how a player may mark the ball as long as the original manufacturer’s markings can be discerned. Nearly every ball sold has a number on it though there is no rule stipulating that it has to have one. Some companies have added fun characters to their balls, and of course, corporate logos, fun images, photos, etc. have been added for promotional use.

Modern golf balls are all “solid core”, meaning there is a large rubber core inside the ball. They became especially popular in 2000 when Titleist introduced the original Pro V1. The core is made mostly of a synthetic polymer rubber material. The more resilient the core is, the higher the energy return (ball speed) when a force is applied to it. Two-piece balls are then given a cover that is made from Surlyn or other ionomer. They are then painted and numbers and logos are applied. A clearcoat is then sprayed over them.

A three-piece golf ball has a casing layer, referred to as a mantle that is added over the core and before the cover is put on the ball. A four-piece ball has a dual-core where a smaller core is encased in a larger one, followed by the mantle and then the cover. A four-piece ball could also have one core and two mantles and a cover. TaylorMade does offer a five-piece ball with one core, three mantles and a cover.

The truth is here — colored balls do not perform any differently than white balls as it has been repeatedly tested. Colored balls are strictly a cosmetic difference and may offer visibility advantages. Colored balls stand out in low-light situations. Some players feel that it is easier to focus on the ball during the swing if it is colored. Yellow is the preferred choice as shown by Peter Malnati who won the Valspar in 2024.

Now the performance part - high and low spin. A tee shot applies a large amount of impact to a ball. The ball compresses and rebounds effectively, resulting in a lower spin. Shots around the green involve less force, so spin is largely influenced by the ball’s surface. A soft urethane cover easily gets into the grooves of the wedge thus increasing spin. The dimples on the ball help to improve its aerodynamics and give your shot lift, but nearly all of the energy from your swing creates forward thrust for more distance instead of creating spin. The amount of spin you can generate can vary significantly based on the ball's cover material. Balls with ionomer covers tend to have lower spin than softer urethane covers, which have more spin.

So are the higher-priced balls worth it? Softer urethane-covered balls cost more than the ionomer-covered balls. So if you are really serious about your game the higher-priced balls are worth it. Go see for yourself by testing different golf balls and see what is right for your game, especially around the greens. If you can do so, try them with a launch monitor to get real-time feedback. You should be able to see and feel which ball is best for your game.

Charlie Parsons at theleftrough.com contends that there are 7 “must have” shots if you want to be more consistent on the course.

With virtually golf season over, it is now a good time to look back and review what you might improve upon for 2025. Nothing like getting a jump start on your game.

Charlie has found after playing for several decades that all good golfers have these seven shots in common. With these shots you can play well at nearly any course and in all types of weather conditions. Once you have them “in your bag”, you start playing to your potential faster than ever. These will come as no surprise.

How many do you have on automatic and how many do you need to practice more?

1. STOCK DRIVE — You must learn to have a dependable drive. If you are consistently using a three wood of the tee you are making it far harder on yourself. Face it. Better players hit it longer off the tee. Today’s drivers with their new technology have never been easier to hit. Get fitted for the right driver.

2. FAIRWAY FINDER — This is the shot you can rely on to find the short grass and stay out of trouble. And yes, it can be your driver. The longer you hit off the tee, the easier it is to score lower since you have a shorter distance to the green.

3. KNOCKDOWN IRON SHOT — This is the shot that Tour Players use when it is windy. Because it is flighted lower and has less spin, it is more consistent and straighter than a normal iron shot. Choke up on the grip which leads to better contact and a more solid shot. Great in windy conditions. Don’t confuse this with a punch shot which is much lower and shorter and is usually a recovery shot.

4. FAIRWAY BUNKER SHOT - Pick the right targets off the tee to avoid these at all costs since they are a low percentage shot. Better the rough than this.

5. GREENSIDE BUNKER SHOT - But of course. Greenside bunkers are part of the game so be confident when you walk in the sand. This one you can practice over and over so have a pre-shot routine which will give you the mindset that you need.

6. BUMP AND RUN — This shot is a very simple motion and has a low speed compared to a full swing shot. It is very similar to a putting stroke but just done with a wedge or short iron. The goal is to get the ball on the green as fast as possible and get it rolling like a putt. You are not trying to create backspin or have much wrist action. Learn to putt from the fringe also.

7. PITCH SHOT — This is a must also. It’s more challenging than a bump and run but a lot easier to hit than a flop shot. Use this shot when you don’t have enough room to hit a lower, bump and run shot. Use a sand or a lob wedge.

It’s easy to get caught up in all kinds of crazy shots, but the truth is that you want to keep it as simple as possible. Don’t make it harder by going for the low percentage shot or being overly aggressive when you are in trouble. Practice the seven shots above if you want to break 80 or be a single digit golfer. Master the basics.

To learn more about these shots along with more detail, read the entire article by clicking here. https://theleftrough.com/shots-every-golfer-needs/?utm_source=newsletter_395&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=7-must-have-shots Maybe bookmark it for next year.
