Tiger is Back and Competing Today
The Comeback King

Tiger’s back. Like him or not, he is one of the greatest players and definitely one of the most influential. He has had his share of ups and downs, highs and lows, but always seems to prevail. Age has matured this guy and he is a wonderful father as seen by his devotion to son, Charlie.

The 82-time PGA Tour winner last teed it up at the Masters but had to withdraw even after having made the cut due to plantar fasciitis.

During his recuperation, Tiger has been busy with the TGL, the virtual golf league he co-founded, which should start in 2025. He has also been designing courses and caddying for Charlie. He is now ready to attack the links again.

Tiger announced that he will participate in the Hero World Challenge in Albany, Bahamas, which he is a host of which starts today. He will tee off at 11:52 Eastern Time with Justin Thomas.

He will also play in the PNC Championship with son Charlie as his partner next week. The 72-hole Hero World Challenge requires walking but the 36-hole PNC does not and he can use a cart. He has said in a recent interview that he is pain-free when it comes to his shattered ankle but that it is other areas that give him trouble.

You can bet Tiger will receive a lot of air time especially with new caddie, Rob McNamara, his longtime business partner.

The Best Way to Clean Your Clubs
and Golf Balls

Other than someone else doing it (like your spouse but then let’s not get crazy), you probably wipe them off with a towel on occasion or while waiting on the next tee box, take a tee and pick out the grooves on your wedges. But is that really cleaning them?

With golf season winding down, you really should give them a good cleaning before you “pickle” them for the winter. Alan, GOLF.com‘s fearless digital editor, seems to have arrived on the idea while in peak dad mode over one weekend. His solution to the ever-present problem? We aren’t telling but it really works. You will have to click here https://golf.com/instruction/2019/08/31/how-to-clean-golf-clubs-best-way/?utm_source=newsletter_455&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=giving-your-clubs-a-thorough-cleaning to see his ingenious idea. And you might get the driveway cleaned while you are at it. (hint, hint)

By the way it works really well on your shoes also. Don’t forget to dry them off.

Hmmmmmm…………..wonder if the dishwasher might work. It works wonders for visors and hats.

Frost Delays Affect Everyone

It's that time of year when frost delays are inevitable. And they affect everyone when they do happen.

Golf course turf is normally resilient to traffic, but when ice crystals form inside the plants, they become brittle and vulnerable to damage. Walking or driving over frost-covered grass may rupture plant cells, leading to dead turf.

When grass gets frosted over, the water in its plant cells can freeze and expand. If you trample on it, or ride your cart across it, those icy molecules can shatter. That’s not broken glass. It’s broken grass.

We value our turf and want to protect it. So if we have a two-hour frost delay, please know that everyone’s tee time for the day will be two hours behind so you need to plan accordingly. Yes, it is a domino effect involving everyone and we appreciate your patience for this turf-saving inconvenience.

Are you a Frustrated Golfer?

Ever wonder why you subject yourself to trying to put a hard ball with a 1.68 inch diameter into a 4.25 inch golf cup from anywhere between 90 to 500 yards? All golfers have a unique reason unto themselves as to why. The most common reasons are being outdoors, getting some exercise, hanging with friends, and conquering the challenge. Some other ones include getting away from the house and being alone.

If indeed we are going to spend 4+ hours, shouldn’t we maximize the “happy” factor associated with golf? All too often some golfers take it WAY too seriously and are constantly berating themselves the entire round, which really diminishes the “happy” factor for both that player and the rest of the group. They can actually spoil the round for the rest of the group with their sourpuss attitude. How can they take it so seriously when they only play every now and then; don’t take lessons: nor practice; and then expect to hit single-digit handicap shots?

Try these suggestions to bring out more of your “happy” factor:

Remind yourself to focus on the positives – being outdoors, being with friends, being grateful for being able to physically hit the ball. Spend a few moments really contemplating what each means and the benefit to you for more than mere nano-seconds on these three thoughts and feel the release of the “feel good” neurotransmitters flood your body.

Play with folks who aren’t as good as you are. This tip will make you feel better about your playing ability. If you play often with folks who are always better than you, you will learn from them but may subconsciously take on the feeling that you should be as good as they are though you’re not. That means you will expect more out of your shots and you set yourself up for disappointment then. Take a break and play with higher handicappers and it will further your golf self-esteem.

Don’t keep score or at least pick up after triple bogey. Sometimes there is too much emphasis on score. Just go out and enjoy hitting each shot and forget about the “result”. Stroke play can be demoralizing if you lose every time. Change up the format or play match play so you have an opportunity to win some.

Don’t beat yourself up over a bad shot because 1) you aren’t a tour player as they hit bad shots also, and 2) you don’t play or practice enough to do so. Remind yourself that you have not earned the right to complain about your play.

Try laughing at your bad shot. Seriously, laugh and howl out loud. Fake it if you have to. You WILL feel better as laughter truly is the best medicine.

Longest Ever Drive

Kyle Berkshire shattered his personal best and set a new world record for distance launching a Pro V1x 579 yards at Rawlins Golf Club in Wyoming on October 2, as reported in an article in the Cowboy State Daily. It was hit so far and so fast, it couldn’t be seen with the naked eye off the club. The ball carried 515 yards in the air. It didn’t land for a full 11 seconds.

Later in the day he topped that off with a record ball speed off the club — an astounding 241.7 mph. For perspective, the longest hitters on the PGA Tour attain a ball speed of approximately 190 mph. Kyle is 26 years old and says he is getting stronger, longer and better. He claims that he is far from peaking so we are wondering how long his record will stand. He is 6’3 and weighs in at 215 pounds and all he cares about is distance. You won’t find him working on his short game or putting. He will probably be in the gym strength training.

Berkshire is technically honed, fundamentally sound, and his mechanics are flawless. He works with the finest golf pros and sports psychologists in the field. Kyle is a physically gifted athlete as well as a fine-tuned machine. And he is pretty accurate as well with only a few wayward shots.

Now for us mere mortals, let’s bring you back to earth with the Arccos Golf average distance for males in 2022 for age and handicap. How do you fare? See image below.

Easy Ways to Improve Your Game

So golf season is starting to wind down. How are you playing overall? If you say "about the same", consider this may be the reason why.

If you tee it up the same way, round after round, perhaps with the same pre-shot routine or the same on-course management, you may end up with very similar results year after year.

In an article by Today’s Golfer, 50 top coaches were asked to give their best advice on equipment, technique and course management. Here are 5 tips that may enlighten you to do something just a bit differently to improve your game.

1. Streamline your pre-shot routine. Is your current one effective or do you spend way too much time over the ball? According to Kevin Hale, the shorter your pre-shot routine, the better as less doubt will creep into your mind.

2. Choose the right ball for your game. Have you really thought about what kind of feel your golf ball has off the club face, the trajectory or the softness around the greens? Take some time to discuss this with your instructor. More consistency with your golf ball may produce a better score.

3. Prioritize rhythm and balance. By devoting some time on the range to these two attributes you may find better consistency in your game, particularly on those days that feel a little “off” in your swing.

4. Use your DMD (distance measuring device such as a range finder or GPS) then select a club that you need to get to the back of the green. Most golfers “under” club. And even if you hit your shot flush, you are still on the back of the green.

5. Play to the center of the green. A little discipline goes a long way if you can ignore those pin placements and think to aim for the “heart” of the green.

The Dreaded Word

It's coming up on that time of year when we need to prepare the course for winter. Aerification is a necessary agronomy practice to keep the course in the kind of shape that you expect.

We will be doing so on October 3th & 4th with play available. Greens aerification will begin Tuesday, October 3th, on hole #1 at 11:30 am and will continue through Wednesday, October 4th until all of our greens are aerified.

Remember that two putts are a guarantee during aerification week. But go for the one putt!

The Solheim Cup was a great golf-watching experience than ran the gamut from fantastic shots to flubs, long makes to short misses on putts, and elation to disappointment.

Ultimately, it ended in the first ever 14-14 tie with Europe retaining the Cup as they were the reigning Cup holder. Somewhat of an unfinished finish after a wonderful week of golf.

So, should a playoff/tiebreaker be used? Your thoughts?

For the first time in Solheim Cup history, the event ended in a 14-14 tie. Did the contest have to be decided that way?

Putting Points of Great Putters

All tour players have their own swing style and that is no different for putting. You see some interesting grips and then there is plain ol’ conventional like Tiger. His putting stroke is timeless and has taken care of him with 15 majors and 80+ wins.

Truth is there is no one way to putt. It’s about finding what works best for you. What’s your style? Charlie Parsons at the leftrough.com points out some fundamentals that nearly all great putters share. Use these three points to make sure you are setting yourself up for success when you putt.

1. Eyes over the ball. Your eye position has a huge impact on your putting stroke. Make sure your eyes are directly over the ball as it allows you to see the line better.

2. Grip pressure. (not style) Whichever grip you choose, make sure that the grip pressure is very light. You want to really feel the grip in your hands. When it is too tight you add tension to your forearms and make it nearly impossible to have a smooth stroke. (Note that when you are nervous or tired, your grip pressure naturally tightens up.)

3. Accelerate through the putt. Most amateurs do just the opposite and decelerate too frequently at impact. (True with golf swings also.) Tempo is so important especially for short putts. On those, make your backstroke 25% of the stroke and your forward stroke 75%. This will help you make more short putts.

Really need some help with your putting? Then contact our Director of Instruction, Matt Lindberg. [email protected]

09/18/2023

Improve Your Game Immediately

of the ways golfers can instantly improve their score is by using an accurate rangefinder. No more eyeballing and no more guessing can make a big difference in the score when it comes to accurate shot making. This takes the human factor out of it and makes figuring distances easy and accurate thus making club selection a breeze. **Please note that this assumes that you know the distance you can hit each club consistently.

There are two types of rangefinders one can use. One is handheld and looks like half of a binocular. You focus on the flag stick and manually lock on your intended target with the use of lasers. Some golfers, seniors in particular (or after a night of serious drinking), found this to be a little bit difficult as one must be rock steady and hold it so that it doesn’t move or shake. Otherwise, readings tend to be inaccurate since it can’t lock on a target, especially the farther away it is.

The other type of rangefinder is a GPS one which uses satellite technology to determine the distances. They are generally a little less expensive and can be on your phone, as a watch, or a portable device that magnetically attaches to the cart or your golf bag. These require pre-loaded courses that have been mapped. Most of these rangefinders have approximately 40,000+ courses programmed into them and then allow for updates as more courses are added.

These GPS rangefinders give you the precise distance to the front of the green, center of the green (not the pin) and the back of the green without worrying about human error. You will have to know where the pin placement is for the day. Of course, if you know what club you need for each of these distances then things like the pin placement, the wind, and if the course has run, will go into the decision of your club selection.

One thing you need to take into consideration is that the elevation changes of the course can affect your club selection. For instance, if you’re standing on a par three where the green is substantially higher or lower than the teeing area, then your club selection will be different than it would be on level ground. This “slope” feature is available in both the laser and GPS rangefinders. If your rangefinder has “slope” built into it, then it will take this into account and can be very helpful. Please note that you cannot use the slope function in competition so be sure your rangefinder has a manual on/off switch before you begin play in a tournament.

Additionally, depending on the type of rangefinder you have, it can give you the distance to hazards and layup points, keep score, and provide other useful information.

If you don’t have one it’s a great time to buy one and get the advantage of shooting lower scores instantly. And with the holiday season coming up, it’s the perfect gift for the favorite golfer on your list. Warning don’t give it to your best friend, as it may be the difference in that person scoring better than you.

Perfect Your Golf Swing

Does a short backswing or an overly long one make a difference in the length of a drive? Think Tony Finau (short) and John Daly (past parallel). Both of these guys bomb the ball so the short answer is no. In other words, the total length of your backswing does not impact distance.

Charlie Parsons at theleftrough.com will tell you that speed and timing are much more critical factors. He says that what matters more than anything is your TRANSITION from your backswing to the downswing. That is the moment of truth. Get it right means the rest of your swing is in sequence and you’ll probably make more solid contact with your club face being square at impact.

If you decide to rush the transition, then several things can go wrong such as:

1. Getting Too Quick — If you rush, then your hips, arms, and shoulders will be out of sync. There needs to be a slight pause at the top of your backswing. This way, you can uncoil and move your weight to your lead foot to start the downswing. If you don’t pause, your weight is more than likely on your back foot which will cause you to lose distance and make poor contact.

If you don’t pause at the top, you will need to practice by actively counting (1-2-Go or 1-2-3) to make yourself pause. It will feel awkward at first but that’s OK. You need to retrain your brain.

2. Getting Too Long — 99% of the Tour Guys are either parallel or short of parallel. When you get too long, bad things can happen such as a reverse pivot (weight staying on the back foot instead of moving forward through impact). Additionally past parallel throws your timing off. Please note that you should never be past parallel with irons and wedges.

***Note from editor. Women especially are guilty of exceeding parallel possibly because they are more flexible. When they do, they often breakdown at the top of their swing and collapse which results in a bad swing and/or loss of distance. Also, this action can result in chicken winging.

Take a few videos of your drives and see if you are guilty of rushing the downswing (no pause) or going past parallel. The videos will be quite telling. Remember to practice the pause on the range if you don’t do so at this time. You will start hitting more consistent shots when you do so.

If you are having trouble or have questions about your swing, contact our Director of Instruction, Matt Lindberg, for help with all aspects of your game. [email protected]

Make Practice Fun with These Driving Range Games

For a lot of golfers practice on the driving range means pounding out drives mindlessly one after the other without much thought as to what one is doing. One may be actually wasting time if there isn’t a real purpose behind it. Yes, repetition is a great way to ingrain a swing but are you wasting your time?

The Social Golfer (SCGA Member Club newsletter) has some great tips that you can do on the driving range that will actually help you improve your game on course. And some of the ideas are actually fun!

1. Simulate a round of golf. Select a course then use your range time simulating play on it. Start with your tee shot on the first hole imagining how you would hit your driver. Then hit your ideal second shot into the green if it is a par 4 or the second fairway shot if a par 5, followed by the shot into the green. Do this for each of the 18 holes on your imagined course until you complete your round. This is a great confidence-building exercise.

2. Hit nine different shots with the same club. (This is one of Tiger’s favorite drills.) If you don’t know what those nine shots are, imagine a Tic-Tac-Toe board of shots. Starting from the bottom row, you have a low, medium and high shot. Starting from the left, you have a draw, a straight shot and a fade. Practice hitting as many of those shots as you can in a session, focusing on one club at a time. Start with, say, a 7-iron, and try to do it. Over time, you’ll develop confidence hitting each of those shots, making you a more dynamic player and preparing you better for anything that comes your way.

3. Compete against someone else. If you have a practice partner or someone who’s willing to go to the range with you, why not turn range time into a mini-competition? Pick a target and hit towards it. Make it best of three or five or seven, and see who hits the ball closest.

How to Save a Round that's Going South

You know the feeling. Your emotions are really getting to you where they are affecting every shot. Your confidence is getting lower and your score is going higher. You keep grinding because quitting isn’t an option. Your goal is to stop the bleeding so stop the low-percentage hero shots and go with safer shots.

The area of golf where most players struggle is how they manage their games when things are not going well. While you may not believe it, this is one of the keys to improving. When the round starts heading south, you have to make a choice. You can either declare the day a loss and spend the rest of your round muttering around in self-loathing OR you can dig your heels in and commit to yourself that you will fight the good fight.

Most of us forget to play the game we have. The So-So Golfer has 6 suggestions that will help you salvage the round. Do the following to limit the damage.

1. Forget the new swing mechanics you are trying to perfect. Go back to what is predictable.

2. Tee off with what’s working (like a three wood) instead of spraying the driver all over the place

3. Play shots you know how to play. Use a minimum lofted club and get to safety.

4. Don’t overcomplicate. Forget the tour pro, low percentage shots.

5. Don’t give up. (Think Lucas Glover currently and of course, the GOAT Tom Brady.)

6. Have fun. Isn’t that why you are out there?

Bad rounds happen to everyone so don’t let it get to you. Even the tour pros have them. Enjoy your friends and the beauty around you. There’s time to tweak your shots before the next game.
