Last night, rehearsals for The Hunchback of Notre Dame were all over the theater! We had sword fighting in the kitchen (Jared and Alex as Frollo and Phoebus) dancing in the art gallery, and singers rehearsing upstairs on stage.

The Hunchback of Notre Dame was written by Victor Hugo and published in 1831. The novel brings up the mistreatment of the Romani people and people with disabilities. To portray our characters in a way that will honor those who suffered in the past and share a message against mistreatment, the cast, led by our Assistant Director, Katherine Marchiano, participated in research and discussion sessions. They read articles, had open, honest conversations, and explored the topics together in preparation for the show.

Last night, we had a cast-bonding social hour after rehearsal. One of our cast members, Nick, surprised us with a box of The Hunchback of Notre Dame trading cards from 1997! The cast members each opened a pack, traded, and ended up completing this Notre Dame scene with all of the characters! Such a cool cast-bonding experience!

Another sneak peek of The Hunchback of Notre Dame musical poster. Our drawing was inspired by the art of Victor Hugo. Known famously as the author of The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Les Miserables, and many others, his skills as a writer are praised worldwide, but his visual art talents are often overlooked. We wanted to capture his use of dark and mysterious atmospheres, and create an homage to his visual artwork. Here you will find many of his visual art pieces. We hope that you enjoy them!

Our Hunchback of Notre Dame poster reveal is coming soon! Our social media manager, Tracy Rose, has been using photos shared by friend of the theatre, Brenda Cowe, of the recently reopened Notre Dame in Paris as references. Here’s a sneak peek of the Rose window that will show up in the design. The window “glass” was created on acetate with a stippling effect featuring thousands of tiny dots making up the texture of each piece of glass. (A nod to France’s Pointillism and Impressionism, though they came after the era of our story.)

Enjoy this brief video of the reconstructed Notre Dame, as seen on Christmas Day, 2024 by a friend, Brenda Cowe, who generously shared images and videos as references for our director in his planning. The iconic structure suffered a fire in 2019 and just reopened in December. Hugo’s novel saved the cathedral from destruction in the 1800s, and we have witnessed it being saved again now!

Our show, with Notre Dame as setting and an integral part of the story itself, runs February 13-23. 🎟️ are available on our website now!

Saturdays are for crew! Creating The Hunchback of Notre Dame set is quite the task. We have to pay homage to one of the most beautiful buildings in the world, so we are working very hard! We had a great group of volunteers here today (including some not-pictured) putting in the time to make this set come together for you!
