Built in 1888, Northfield's historic Milwaukee Depot still stands south of Third Street, a solitary reminder of Northfield’s once-vibrant railroads. Neglect and vandalism have taken their toll, and the depot now faces demolition. It was the town’s primary link to the world outside. The depot is the last remaining depot of the four our community used to have. Now is our last chance for it to once a

gain play a strong role in the city’s economic growth. By re-using an existing building, we guarantee a responsible use of resources and add a beautiful visual asset to our community. YOU can play a key role in protecting and preserving this icon of Northfield’s heritage, making it a catalyst for economic development in the downtown. Together, we can:

• Restore the original 1888 Northfield depot building
• Build the 1917 addition, which includes a "baggage" house and covered portico
• Turn the depot back into a transportation hub…for buses, taxis, and bicycles

🎉 It's happening: Join us and the City of Northfield, Minnesota next Wednesday (June 5) for the transit hub groundbreaking!

The City of Northfield invites the community to a groundbreaking ceremony for the new Northfield Regional Transit Hub at 4 p.m. on June 5 located at the Northfield Historic Train Depot at 204 3rd Street West. The program will include remarks by representatives of Save the Northfield Depot, the city, and others close to the project.

The new Transit Hub will be located just north of the Depot. The site will include a building and a pavilion. The new building features two levels, one at street level and one at rail level, a waiting room, restrooms and elevator.

The city and architect held several meetings with community members during the design phase and the final design incorporates feedback from those meetings most notable around accessibility and functionality.

This site will serve as a connection and transfer point for local and regional bus and other transportation options. Hiawathaland Transit which serves as a bus service in Northfield and Faribault is expected to use the Transit Hub as their Northfield hub. Hiawathaland will continue to serve their current routes.

Just a few years back the Depot was slated for demolition. A group of dedicated volunteers, along with the city’s support, was able to move the Deport from its blighted site. Now the Depot has lovingly been restored, has a sculpture garden and hosts a variety of events throughout the year including nonprofit organization meetings, private social events and art events.

Save the Northfield Depot has been advocating for MnDOT to pursue passenger rail service from the Twin Cities to Kansas City with a stop in Northfield.

Construction will start June 10 and is expected to be completed in October. The City of Northfield was awarded $1.75 million in state bonding funds to complete the Transit Hub.

"Proposed routes in Minnesota would also likely serve towns along the way. The route from the Twin Cities to San Antonio could stop in Northfield, Faribault, Owatonna and Albert Lea. 'That's quite a bit of support in southern Minnesota,' [Brian] Nelson [of All Aboard Minnesota] said."

There is indeed. 😊

The expansion of intercity passenger rail serving Minnesota is still in the fact-finding phase.

Eight years ago, we moved the depot off of railroad property to save it. The subsequent generosity of the community provided the critical combination of time, skills, and funding that has led to a new stage: from rehabilitation to utilization. The recent significant transition in the focus of the mission made the 2023 year particularly exciting and rewarding.
