My last home grown dahlia of ‘24. 10/31…I get most of my dahlia supply from wonderful local floral farmers, but a few tubers still manage to bloom in my very shaded property.

Drying Hydrangeas — This time of year is a great time to pick your hydrangeas to dry after the blooms have reached a mature state, which means the petals have started to change color and have a papery feel as they’ve started to naturally dry on the plant. If you pick too early in the season, the blooms will simply wilt after a few days. There are different ways to dry hydrangeas, but my favorite way is vase drying — simply cut your stems at an angle, remove the leaves and place upright in a vase with a few inches of water out of direct sunlight. As the water evaporates, the blooms slowly dry over several weeks while holding their color and shape beautifully. Air drying is another option — just remove the leaves along the stem and bundle 4-6 stems together to hang/dry in a cool, dry place. Preserving the blooms with glycerin and water is also an option, but I have yet to try that method. I love to create wreaths and other crafts including saving the blooms for my dried flower Christmas trees at the holidays. Wishing everyone many blessings and happy gardening today. It was SUNNY today so I treated myself to some lovely blooms from my local grocery store and made a centerpiece for ME!

Winter is long and very grey here in Northeast Ohio. Brighten someone’s day who is having a tough time. My regular customers seem to know this and call me to design as they know it also makes me very happy!
