My Food Story...

I’m Angie Montroy and this is my food story.

I started cooking when I was 12. My mom & Grandma Inez from the start gave me free reign in their kitchens, allowing me to sp**ge all over their cookbooks and make crazy messes. I learned from a very early age that food=love.

My mom spent a lot of time in the kitchen as we had 5 kids and she was a stay at home mom, stretching her budget by canning her own vegetables, meats & fish and making her own homemade preserves, pickles & jellies. To this day I crave her fried chicken, homemade bread and soups. Nothing went to waste, at the end of the week she’d compile a soup with all of the tid- bits leftover from the week of meals. To this day, soup is one of my favorites.

Anything and everything Grandma made was amazing! Things that come to mind: Navy Bean Soup, French Toast, Turkey with all the sides. I miss my grandma.

I earned my Bachelors Degree from Central Michigan on a full volleyball scholarship and majored in Retail Merchandising with a Clothing Design Concentration. All the while entertaining coaches, teammates & friends in my tiny on campus apartment kitchen.

I worked in the fashion world for years after graduation. My first job was in a small specialty dress shop, I made $7/hour. To make additional money to afford living on my own, I began to make custom clothing for clients including wedding gowns, bridesmaids dresses and custom suits for working professionals. I worked in wholesale sales for an upscale sweater company and landed a job working for New York based clothing designer Adrienne Vittadini. At one point the company was sold, my job eliminated and my cooking career began.

I began working for individual clients in their homes, got married, had a baby and thought I could bring my infant son to work, I don’t need to go into to much detail telling you how that did NOT work out! I purchased an additional refrigerator for my basement and started offering menus much the way I do now to a group of clients. They ordered. I delivered. I grew.

In May of 2012 I struck up a kitchen rental relationship with the Nineteenth Century Club in Oak Park. It was one of the best moves ever. I started working with one employee, then two and it went on. I now have 6 part time women working with me and they are AWESOME! All excellent cooks in their own right and adding so much to my mission.

Healthy cooking has always inspired me. I love taking a totally decant dish and turning it into something healthy that won’t sabotage your health. We use the healthiest cooking techniques and aim to get as many vegetables as possible into every dish we offer. I serve foods to my clients that I serve my own family. Healthy vegetables, high quality meats, poultry & fish.
