“Every November, Venetians celebrate their own version of Thanksgiving with the Festa della Salute. Like the Festa del Redentore, this festival was established as an offering of gratitude for the end of a plague, this time via St. Mary. Desperate at the loss of life during 1630-1631, Venice's doge, Nicolò Contarini, and the Church's patriarch, Giovanni Tiepolo, organized the city's surviving citizens for a procession of prayers for three days and three nights to plead for mercy. The Venetians also made a solemn vow to Madonna that, in return for the city surviving the epidemic, they would build a temple in her honor. In a matter of days, the infections began decreasing, until eventually they disappeared completely.

Although the plague ultimately claimed around 47,000 people, roughly a quarter of Venice's population at the time, (for perspective, the current population of Venice is around 55,000), including the doge and the patriarch, the government of the Serenissima carried out its vow and had the majestic Basilica of the Madonna della Salute built in the Dogana da Mar area, where the Grand Canal and Giudecca Canal meet, clearly visible from San Marco. The project, entrusted to Baldassarre Longhena, began in 1631, but would not be completed until more than 50 years later, in 1687.

The festival was established on 21 November (the same date the Santa Maria Nuova basilica was consecrated in Jerusalem in 543), and every year on this day, the Basilica can be reached crossing the Grand Canal on foot from Santa Maria del Giglio via a temporary votive bridge, constructed three days earlier. The faithful continuing to observe this date as a day of thanks to the Madonna for the health of their city.”
