Winter Watch - A hand-signed limited edition serigraph by Edie Harper— available at the shop. Edie McKee Harper was an American photographer, artist, and wildlife conservationist. Harper made her living as an artist for 60 years, working in many mediums. Her work is often over-shadowed by her famous husband, Charley Harper, possibly because of the similar themes and graphic style. Get a head start on Oberlin's Juneteenth Celebrations and order and pick up your Juneteenth t-shirt in adult and children sizes. Exclusively at the Carlyle Gift and Flower Shop - in adult sizes Small, Medium, Large, X-Large, 2XL, 3XL, (100% Cotton Pre-shrunk fabric) - $20 and Youth sizes, Small, Medium and Large - $20.
The design draws on the historical legacy of Juneteenth and the Underground Railroad. When freedom finally came on June 19, 1865, sighting the date and gray stars on the design and incorporating a contemporary colors scheme with a white star in the middle for hope.
According to legend, a safe house along the Underground Railroad was often indicated by a quilt hanging from a clothesline or windowsill. These quilts were embedded with a kind of code, so that by reading the shapes and motifs sewn into the design, an enslaved person on the run could know the area’s immediate dangers or even where to head next. This design is a log cabin quilt square which code meant that “Seek shelter now, the people here are safe to speak with” to travelers on their journey north. It been a while since I made this design and some of my notes are lost but that sums up what I created. Kat Sikora Hilton

Did you know that there is an International World Peace Rose Garden that was planted at the Martin Luther King Jr National Historic Site in Atlanta, Georgia? Planted in 1992, it is designed to encourage and help youth recognize the importance and value of peace. It has 185 roses in a variety of colors and fragrances.
Martin Luther King, Jr. “I Have a Dream” World Peace Rose Garden borders the Peace Plaza, in front of the Visitors’ Center. The graves of Martin Luther King, Jr. and Coretta Scott King can be seen directly across the street if you stand at the Peace Plaza, facing the rose garden.
