Rodeo royalty represents strength, grace, and dedication to the sport of rodeo. This doesn’t stop inside of the arena, it extends out into our community as well.
We are so grateful to all the wonderful cowgirls that work tirelessly to represent Ogden Pioneer Days, the great state of Utah, and the sport of rodeo as a whole.

👑 Meet Dale Evans, the Queen of the West who proved being a lady and being tough aren't mutually exclusive!

Born Frances Smith in small-town Texas, Dale worked as a radio singer before heading to Hollywood. But it wasn't until she was paired with Roy Rogers in a western film that her true calling became clear. 🎬

Dale didn't just act the part of a cowgirl… she truly lived it. She learned to ride, rope and shoot right alongside Roy.

The two fell in love and married in 1947, creating one of the most beloved partnerships in Western entertainment to this very day. 🤠

But Dale's real legacy goes deeper than her performances. She wrote "Happy Trails" (yep, THAT "Happy Trails"!) and over 25 inspirational books. Inspired by her daughter Robin, she used her platform to champion children with special needs. 💕

And yet, even with all her success, Dale stayed true to her values. She always said the most important things in life were "faith, family and friends." 🫂

When asked about her greatest achievement, she'd say it was being a wife, mother and grandmother.

Today's cowgirls still look up to Dale as someone who showed you can be feminine and fierce, glamorous and genuine, successful and humble - all at the same time. 🌟

📖 This Women's History Month, we're tipping our hats to some incredible ladies who helped shape rodeo and the Western way of life.

First up is Annie Oakley, who rode into fame with her jaw-dropping sharpshooting skills. Maybe you've heard the story… but did you know this legendary lady started hunting at age 8 to help feed her struggling family? 🎯

By 15, she'd paid off their mortgage with her hunting money.

And when she out-shot traveling marksman Frank Butler in a friendly competition, she not only won $100—she won his heart, too! ❤️ They married a year later.

Annie went on to become the star of Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show. She could hit a dime tossed in the air from 90 feet away, and she'd shoot backwards using just a mirror to aim. 🪞

And her most famous trick? Splitting a playing card edge-on at 30 paces, then hitting it again five or six times before it touched the ground! 🤠

But Annie wasn't just about showmanship. During her career, she taught over 15,000 women how to use a gun. She believed every woman should know how to handle a firearm. Not just for protection, but to boost their confidence too.

Over her life, Annie blazed trails that went way beyond the arena. She showed that a girl from humble beginnings could become a worldwide sensation through grit, determination and practice. 💪

💝 They say rodeo is like one big family. And after 90 years of OPD, we know that's absolutely true!

Because "rodeo family" goes way beyond blood relations. It includes:
🤠 The volunteers who show up early and stay late
👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 The families who haven't missed a year since grandpa's first visit
🐎 The stock contractors who treat every animal like family
🎪 Rodeo announcers, clowns, bull fighters and specialty acts who make it extra special
👊 The first-time competitors who instantly become part of the crew

That's the magic of rodeo – it's a community where:
🤝 Everyone pitches in
💪 Nobody faces challenges alone
❤️ Traditions live on through new generations

As we wrap up our January series, we'd love to know: Who's part of your rodeo family? Tell us below! 👇
