This technique isn’t as glamorous as stippling or the smash & twirl, but every painter has to use it every time they paint.
This type of brush rinsing happens during the painting process, when you’re switching between paint colors. Acrylic paint can hide deep down in the bristles, and come out in unwelcome places on your canvas – unless you know how to properly rinse your paintbrush.
First, the obvious: Wipe the excess paint on a paper towel. Then dip your brush in water (it doesn’t even have to be clean water, honestly). Then scrubby scrub scrub the bristles on the bottom of the water cup. It’s OK to use a little elbow grease here.
Wipe again on the paper towel. If even a little paint comes off, dip and scrub again. Dip, scrub, wipe and repeat until the brush is clean.
Blue and red acrylic paints are extra stubborn, so expect to do a few rounds of this brush rinsing technique on those colors

How to paint fluffy clouds! Fun and essential know-how for most painting styles.
You will need: A canvas + medium flat paintbrush + white acrylic paint + blue acrylic paint. (Glass of wine optional.)
How to Paint Fluffy Clouds:
Paint a blue sky on your canvas. While the sky is still wet, use white paint to draw arched cloud tops. Then water down the white paint on your canvas, just a little. Carefully fill in the clouds. You’ll see the blue and white paint blending into soft, cloud-like tones. To keep the clouds from becoming all one color, be sure not to over-blend your paint.
Soft, fluffy little clouds! Once you get this painting technique down, experiment with different shapes and color tones for different types of skies.

How to Paint Water Reflections
You will need: A canvas + small flat paintbrush + acrylic paint in colors of your choice.
Use the tip of the paintbrush for thin lines, holding the brush so the bristles stay horizontal. Use fast, loose movements to create two uneven columns of streaks. Press down a little more toward the center of the canvas, and ease up on the pressure at the edges of the canvas.
To make sure your reflection steaks look natural, step back from the canvas every few minutes and take a hard look at the picture.
Layer on more colors as you go, but don’t cover your background up completely. Finish it off with white highlights before painting in the rest of your landscape.

How to paint a blended vignette: Start on the corners with darkest color, then blend medium tone(s) into those corners. Add in white paint, a little at a time, until the entire canvas is covered.

Simple and evocative, this technique is a hallmark of our artists. The end result is a blurry-leaf look that’s perfect for rainy day paintings, dewy forest-scapes, and misty evening scenes.
You will need: One medium flat brush and 2-4 paint colors of your choice. Optional: A nice moody Merlot.
To start, get paint on both sides of your brush. Make short, fat dashes, alternating brush sides as you paint. To help the leaves blur together and really nail the misty look, lift your paintbrush up a bit as you complete each brushstroke. Paint a few “leaves” in one color, then alternate to another color. Layering your colors helps get the final blurry-leaf look.
