I’ll level with you guys. Sometimes, the world is unkind, people are unkind. We lose loved ones, friendships drift, lovers come and go. Hope and dreams and aspirations fly out the window.
When I started Ray’s Room, I was a woman just a year and some months from leaving a relationship with a narcissist. I had very little money. I had very little hope. I had relatively little experience. Nonetheless, I pushed forward, my heels dug in. I created my safe space, surrounding myself with flowers, telling the stories of other’s love, heartbreak, adoration, and everything in between amidst my own journey through fear, heartbreak, and abuse.
Why flowers? They don’t talk back, they don’t tell you that you’ll never be enough, and they very rarely betray you (and usually that’s your own shortsightedness or inexperience or incompetence when they do). They are medium, no different than paint, and it’s entirely your choice what to do with them.
Flash forward all this time later, and I’m in a storefront, and experimenting, but also experiencing. If you told 24 year-old Rachel, crying on the floor on her birthday, shuddering in fear and anxiety, that this is where she would end up, she would’ve laughed uncontrollably (trauma).
Since then, it’s been so many ups and downs, so many lessons, heartbreaks, and little joys, but we’ve made it this far.
Inside of all of us is this unfettered hope, and if we cling to it, that hope will take us so far. My dream was to create a space to thrive, to make art, to blast my music, to make others feel safe, to share my love, and create community.
Ray’s Room is so much more than a place or idea. It is a community.
All are welcome. All are loved. All are appreciated.
I suppose the end of this long rant is to tell you that you have to hold on. Life is so worth living. There is always new love, friendship, hope, and dreams just around the corner. Cling to the ones that love you most—I never could’ve made it this far without my friends and family, they are the foundation of my life. Keep your chin up, and your heart open.
Thank you for your support, for your love, for your kindness, and your business.
