When Larry Zbyszko turned his back on his mentor Bruno Sammartino, it incited one of the greatest rivalries and heel turns in wrestling history.

When people think of ECW, many names come to mind. Sandman, Raven, RVD, Sabu, Taz and Terry Funk to mention a few. Some that many wouldn't expect, however, include Jimmy Snuka, Don Muraco, Johnny Hotbody and Tito Santana. All of these men held the (then) Eastern Championship Wrestling title prior to Paul Heyman changing the "E" to extreme (with some help from Shane Douglas) and helped elevate that championship's prestige. In fact, although WWE recognizes Douglas as the first official ECW champion, it was actually Snuka 2 years prior, and it would spend much of that time around his waist until the NWA affiliation infamously went up in flames on August 27, 1994 as Douglas declared the ECW belt the "Real World Championship", tossing aside the dated NWA belt and effectively dissolved the Alliance in its original form.

The late, great Leon White, aka Big Van Vader, was larger than life in more ways than one. With a full Manga dedicated to his backstory, Vader was an instant villain when he debuted in New Japan in 1987. His squash victory against The legendary Antonio Inoki, combined with frustrations at an already subpar show, led to a sold out Sumo Hall crowd rioting and NJPW being banned from the venue for 2 years. Despite the ban, the 2 legends would go on to sell out every arena, hall and stadium in Japan, reviving interest in NJPW in the process. Vader would later return to the US to dominate WCW and start his legendary rivalry with Sting.

One of the frequently repeated myths among wrestling fans is that Hogan was the first (and many believe only) man to hoist up Andre the Giant and slam him back down. However, as shown in the images below, he was slammed by the likes of Antonio Inoki, Kamala, Stan Hansen, Riki Choshu, and most famously Harley Race. While it was a rare spot, it never failed to get a huge response from the crowd every time.

Love this story, Diamond Dallas Page is a real classy guy. Y'all make sure to follow The Signature Spot if you don't already, his content is always top notch.

During his appearance on Steve Austin's Broken Skull Sessions, DDP brought up that around Thanksgiving of 1997, he was thinking of all the people he was grateful for but also wanted to consider someone who might not know it. While Dusty, Hall, Nash and Jake Roberts knew how much he was thankful, Page wondered if Randy Savage knew.

DDP proceeded to call Randy Savage and express his sincere gratitude for their incredible rivalry and for putting him over. In fact, Page pointed out that if Savage didn't offer to lose to him at Spring Stampede, he wouldn't be at that position on the card or be at that point in his career.

Come Monday, Savage found Page at Nitro and pulled him into an office. Randy told DDP he listened to the message several times and shared it with his father. Randy asked his father, Angelo, if any of his past opponents had made such a kind gesture, to which he said no.

Randy wanted DDP to know how much the voicemail message meant to him and gave Page a big hug.

Pro-Wrestling has a rich history the world over, but perhaps no 2 countries have contributed more star power, mystique, and credibility to the art of the dance as Japan and the US. No doubt Mexico gave us Lucha Libre, Canada gave us masterful technicians, and Europe gave us some of the toughest brawlers ever, but they all strived and continue to strive for one of 2 places. The ties between those 2 places run deep. While the WWE has historically ignored the existence of other promotions (or treated them as another indie promo), it tends to reference Japan reverently, if vaguely. 2 men you'll see recurring in the photos below are Antonio Inoki, and Dusty Rhodes. Both men had the rare distinction to be a hero in both countries, whereas many Americans (The Funks, Abdullah, Flair and even Hogan) defaulted to the heel role as many Japanese wrestlers do in America. Both nations have much to be proud of when it comes to their contributions to the squared circle, and those 2 men may be the most influential of all.
