The US Government encouraged relocation of Native Americans in the 1940's and 1950's to urban centers. Public Law 959, better known as the Indian Relocation Act of 1956 formalized their intentions. This action gave rise to many Urban Native American organizations across the US from which the Oklahoma City Pow Wow Club and The Tulsa Indian Club/Tulsa Powwow came into existence. Ancient stories told by many Indigenous tribes describe a large, hairy forest-dwelling creature that is called by many names, known to Kiowas as K’ópsàupól (k’ōpe-sau-pōle). He is personified as living in the darkness of the canyons and forest, but also walks upright on two feet and in legend, was able to converse in Kiowa. Happy Halloween!
