We celebrated our 11th birthday yesterday which caused us to reflect on the origins of our work in floristry. From the beginning, we’ve taken on the most charming weddings and can remember each one so vividly. Whether our clients tied the knot surrounded by Oklahoma City’s downtown scape; tucked away in the Osage Hills; upon a breathtaking cliff in Pagosa Springs; or in a loved one’s garden, our approach to design is the same—honoring of the natural materials we get to work with while also telling the stories of kinship, resilience and love.

While our design work has diversified over the years, we still feel drawn to the humble love stories that make their way to us. It is our privilege to be storytellers of such miracles.

If you are reading this and we had the honor of surrounding you with flowers on the day your love went on the record, we are wish to share our gratitude. You let us into an intimate family moment and now we feel you are as close as kin.

Our womenfolk are hosting a Freedom feast—resurrecting an old tradition established by our East Texas ancestors. So, as we were sitting around the table planning the menu a couple weeks ago, Aunt Plum pulled out this photo of our kinfolk, reminding us of their long held resilience in a deeply turbulent home state.

Tom Jones and Amanda Hurd (bottom middle) are our third great grandparents. They were children living on a plantation in East Texas in 1865, the year of Jubilee. Their daughter, Martha Ann (top left) is our matriarch. Her daughter, our Gigi Mama, would share stories of summers spent with her grandparents, Tom and Amanda, on their peach orchard in East Texas.

This year, we will celebrate Juneteenth with our elders and loved ones, carrying on the tradition of a Freedom feast. And if you know anything of what freedom tastes like you know there will be catfish, fried chicken, collard greens (cooked correctly *wink*), sweet potatoes, macaroni & cheese, fresh relish, corn salad, hot water corn bread, hibiscus tea (and res kool-aid), red velvet cake and home-style ice cream like the church ladies used to churn. And, of course, there will be peaches on the table for Gigi Mama, Tom and Amanda to enjoy with us. 🍑

Lots of folks ask where and how our love of flowers originated. The answer: “in a great many places and influenced by a great many people.” But this man—our Papa— occupies a space among those at the top of that list. He nurtured our love of created things in the simplest and most loving ways. He’d let the prairie behind the house grow tall so that we could pick wildflowers to our hearts’ content. And, mere weeks before his passing, he placed okra seeds in our hands—a lesson in reciprocal Landcare.

The warm prairie months evoke memories of Papa atop his big blue tractor. We can almost smell the diesel of his farm truck as we rumbled along on some dusty backroad with the old time country and western carrying us along.

He was a stately yet humble southern gentleman and will remain one of our muses.

Today is the anniversary of the Greenwood Massacre of 1921. This day also marks three years since we gathered with several florists to erect a memorial at the very site of trauma. This beautiful outpouring was the first installment of our project called “Send Flowers To.”

As you can imagine, our lives and business ethos changed because of our experience at Greenwood. We were aptly called deeper into community care and movement building which is has made the world much clearer from where we sit.

Greenwood, we are still telling your story as you—survivors and descendants—await justice and reparations for all that was lost.

Thank you to every last one of you that were with us on the ground in Tulsa or did your part from where you were to make such a HUGE undertaking happen. We are grateful for your trust in TWM, dedication to community care, and inspiring creativity.

It is out of an abundance of caution and weather awareness that our May 25th workshop will now begin at 1pm at The Roundhouse Bakery in Stillwater. We believe that this earlier time will ensure that workshop participants are sent off with enough time to avoid traveling in severe storms. For those who have purchased tickets, please check your inbox for details.

While at university, Lucas Simmons would spend hours upon hours in the art annex honing his innate talent. Because we were such a tight-knit group of friends on campus, some nights you could find us there with him—playing music and taking breaks for a meal.

Years later, Lucas used our floral art as still life for a commissioned piece. Swipe through to see his process!

Now you can see Lucas’ work beautifully displayed at the Oklahoma State Capital. Look for his piece titled “Labor Omnia Vincit” and follow his career for creative inspiration.
