Deschutes Falls Park is 84 acres and is home to the two tallest waterfalls on the Deschutes River. It is located on a volcanic vent that created the hills around the park 27 million years ago -- the lava is visible in some of the rock formations.

The Deschutes River flows year-round here, even without any summer rainfall. Where does the water come from? It comes from the forest floor soils and cracks in the rock.

The organic material soaks up the winter rain like a sponge. As water levels drop in the spring and summer, the held water drains out to the river.

This groundwater is an essential source of cool, clean water for fish and recreation during the drier months.
