The Teacher Show: Comedy from the Classroom takes place at the Capitol Theater on April 12 🍎

It makes sense that some of our best local comedians are teachers—the profession definitely requires an ironclad sense of humor.

Grab a hall pass and head to this stand-up showcase, which will focus on classroom dynamics relayed by real-life educators and funny folks Katie Nguyen, Todd Basil, Rachel Aflleje & a few special guests.

Created and hosted by Don Gavitte, the show has been described as a “solution for teacher burnout” by NPR. Expect strong content, so leave the kids at home and make it an “adult” field trip.

Sing Sing opens at the Capitol Theater on February 6

Divine G (Colman Domingo), imprisoned at Sing Sing for a crime he didn’t commit, finds purpose by acting in a theatre group with other incarcerated men. When a wary outsider joins the group, the men decide to stage their first original comedy, in this stirring true story of resilience, humanity, and the transformative power of art, starring an unforgettable ensemble cast of formerly incarcerated actors.

“A redemptive portrait of theater’s power to heal, emancipate, and rebel.” – Robert Daniels, RogerEbert.com

Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle screens on February 9 🐊

All ticket sales benefit the Olympia Robotics Federation!

"ORF is a club operating out of Capital High School with members from Capital High School and Olympia High School. We build large and expensive robots to compete in the FIRST Robotics competition. Due to the expenses of these robots, we are always looking for new funding opportunities. For our movie pick, we chose Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle. This movie was selected after a vote from the ORF members because it’s funny and enjoyable and we thought many people would enjoy seeing it in theaters."

Summer of Soul screens at the Capitol Theater on February 14

The film will be introduced by Shawna Hawk M.A., founder of The Women of Color in Leadership Movement and Director of Media Island International

Over the course of six weeks in the summer of 1969, just one hundred miles south of Woodstock, The Harlem Cultural Festival was filmed in Mount Morris Park (now Marcus Garvey Park). The footage was never seen and largely forgotten–until now.

"What this documentary represents to Foundational Black Americans is a capturing of hidden history, often times kept from us and the world intentionally. The partnership between the Hawk Foundation for Research and Education in African Culture, the WCLM, the Olympia Film Society, and the City of Olympia, represent the continuous work being down toward restorative Justice for African Americans in our community.” – Shawna Hawk M.A.

Shawna is a community advocate and leader who has been doing work around African American liberation, inclusion and representation here in the Olympia area for the past 13 years.

News from Home opens on January 16 ✉️

Letters from Chantal Akerman’s mother are read over a series of elegantly composed shots of 1976 New York, where our (unseen) filmmaker and protagonist has relocated. Akerman’s unforgettable time capsule of the city is also a gorgeous meditation on urban alienation and personal and familial disconnection.

Olympia Film Society's Kelly Ramirez will be introducing the film on 1/16 at 7pm
