The 40th Street Theatre

The 40th Street Theatre With both indoor and outdoor spaces, this venue is a well kept secret! It is our hope to restore the theatre to its former glory.

Originally a Vaudevile theatre, the historic 40th Street Theatre has been restored and is now a wonderful event space perfect for private events or live performances. The 40th Street Theatre origianlly opened as The Hamilton Street Theater in 1916, later changed to The Winn Theater in 1930 and finally The 40th Street Theater in 1946.Vaudeville and silent films were featured until films with sound

were introduced. Taking on a project of this magnitude takes an abundance of resources, many of which we do not have. We will not be having benefits to ask for monies. We will, however, ask you to donate your time and/ or materials. Our intention is for this theater to be the hub of the artisan community and available for all forms of artisan expression. It is in this spirit that we invite everyone who has a part or wants to be a part of creating something for everyone to enjoy. We believe great things can be accomplished when people come together to work towards a common goal.

Edit- it’s sounds like the little purr machine has a home. She won’t get to go to her new place until Monday afternoon, so, until she has packed her little kitten suitcase and called a cab I will keep this post up in the event I need to find another home if the first one falls through for any reason.
Guess what?? Another kitten has made her way into our “catosystm”! I realize this is not a good time of year, but she needs a home. I suspect 3-4 months old, she’s friendly. She has been at the neighbors house with kids and another cat, but she cannot stay there.
Please, please help me find her a good home, I don’t want to take her to the humane society or a rescue that is too full.

In all the years I have had cats I have never had a cat that would sleep in an igloo bed. Monkey changes her sleeping spots every 3 to 4 months and her latest spot has been the desk in the guitar shop. The guitar shop desk is a catch-all flat surface so it’s no small feat for her to carve out a space for herself. We thought we would help her out and try an igloo. I believe she approves…..

Yes, almost….. thank goodness the bus stopped because I do have an event tomorrow!!!!

I know we post a version of this post every year, so here we go….
Three days in a row I have had to fill our heated water bowl because it has completely run dry. This means there are not any good water sources around our place so all the creatures are coming to drink from our water bowl.
If you have the resources to purchase a heated water bowl and keep it filled then I am positive there would be some grateful creatures out there!!
Thank you!

This post is a little late, but Please, put water out for all the creatures out there. Even if you never put food out you could help a furry or feathered friend with some fresh water. When it gets this hot with no rain it can be tough for the city dwellers….

After the horrible thieves took my gargoyles and gryphons I have been trying to add items back into the courtyard. Here is my “catgoyle” - I might be a little biased, but I think he looks like he belongs where he’s at….

Our Story

The 40th Street Theatre was built at the turn of the century and opened its doors in the early 1900’s as the Hamilton Street Enterprises as a Vaudeville house that featured many forms of live entertainment. City directories indicate several name changes; it was known as The Hamilton in 1916, then later The Winn Theater in 1930 and finally The 40th Street Theater in 1946. Vaudeville and silent films were featured until films with sound were introduced and commonplace.

We purchased the 40th Street Theatre in 2012 along with several other buildings at 40th and Hamilton Streets. In the beginning, the moved was made to expand Hargiss Stringed Instruments so all the initial work was done to get the guitar shop moved and opened. While we did complete general maintenance on all the buildings, the real restoration of the theatre did not begin until 2015. There was no budget for a renovation of this size so we used over 90% recycled materials and completed it with a pay as you go plan. ( It was really more like every spare penny we could get our hands on went to the theatre!!) . What we couldn’t find or afford to purchase we made and so with a ton of sweat and a lot of imagination we finally got the 40th Street Theatre up and running!

The 40th Street Theatre is a wonderfully unique space to hold an event. Along with the main theatre space there is a catering/ food room, a lounge area that can be used as a bridal suite, a smaller size dressing room and a gorgeous outdoor green space. We have completed the renovation of an adjacent building that can be used for additional seating for the theatre ( as long as everyone doesn’t need to be in the same room) or used for smaller events. It is called the Joyce room in honor of our good friend Bob Joyce who spent many hours helping with the renovation. The theatre and the Joyce room are available to rent for both public and private events Call us to book your special occasion event!!
