During the snow and ice last month, the group of people that stayed at the shop named themselves the "280 Refugees".

As the weather improved, folks trickled out... back to their cars and warm homes. The building became eerily quiet... empty.

What will remain though, are all of these beautiful signatures along the hallway.

It's been FOUR whole years since our building was just an empty shell, yet full of history.

What started as a wild thought, has turned into years of successful business.

I'm grateful for every customer that has come into this space to experience something new and create memories with loved ones ❤️

We had an issue getting the door unlocked today, but our customers didn't let that stop them from throwing axes.

They helped our axe handler hoist her little boy through the window so he could unlock it from the inside 🤣🤣🤣

This kid needs to be on the payroll! ❤️❤️

Also, big thanks to our neighbor for calling to report that a group of people were trying to break in 😅🙌

We anticipated needing to help the unhoused of Opelika or anyone who might not have heat in their home... This storm showed out though.

The roads deteriorated SO FAST and many people got trapped on 280 and 85.

What started as a plan to serve a handful of people turned into a desperate need as truck after truck pulled up to our door with cold, hungry, and tired folks. Around 2am this morning, our shop and The Observer office were both full. People had been stranded for 6-10 hours.

Due to this incredible community and the support you all gave, we were able to care for 38 people. No one was turned away. We haven't ran out of coffee, toilet paper, snacks, drinks, etc. This would not have been possible without so many Opelikans coming together over the past few days!

It is our hope and prayer that the roads become safe throughout the day, and do not refreeze tonight.

The sun will be coming out soon to work on the ice, but for now I'm happy to be listening to the content snoring of exhausted people. This is Opelika, and why we love it.

If anyone in the community is in need of a warm place to stay over the next few days, our door is open! If possible, bring your own pillows/bedding. If you cannot, we do have some blankets available. A pallet on the floor in a warm building might be exactly what is needed to save a life tonight.

If you know anyone in need, send them our way. It is too cold for anyone to be unhoused. ❤️
