HINTS for September 2024 TRIVIA

Wedding season in Florida is upon us! The weather is getting cooler, and people are ready to celebrate love! Did you know some believe the word Honeymoon comes from the 5th-century belief that mead was an aphrodisiac. It was an old custom for the new bride and groom to drink the fermented honey drink the entire first month of their marriage! The well known tradition of the bride wearing a white dress only became common in the US within the last 200 years! Queen Victoria was a popular trendsetter in the 1800s, so when she wore a white dress during her wedding (just like Princess Philippa of England did in 1406) the US loved it and made it into a classic! Another well known wedding tradition comes from Victorian England as a way of bringing luck to the new couple: “Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed, Something Blue” . But did you know there was also “A sixpence in her shoe”? It has largely been forgotten from the saying since the sixpence was last minted in 1967. So get your dancing shoes ready! We’ve got some weddings to attend!

This month is FLASH BACK month! We are re-capping songs from the last Two Years that Pinky & the Brain Trivia have been hosting! Do you remember this tune?!

A 90’s wedding reception staple, “Gonna Make You Sweat” ripped through the airwaves in 1990 with a funky rhythmic backbone, upbeat jams, and topped with the iconic EVERYBODY DANCE NOW! But shortly after its release by the musical group C&C Music Factory, there was a big problem. C&C Music Factory had used the voice of Martha Wash without permission and decided to have another woman lip-sync and dance. According to the lawsuit, C&C Music Factory used an edited compilation of vocal parts Wash recorded earlier that year for an unrelated demo tape and never gave her credit on the album. By the mid-90s the lawsuit was over and C&C Music Factory asked Wash to join the group as a full-time vocalist. Click the link below to listen to “Gonna Make You Sweat” by C&C Music Factory.

Cornelius Brothers & Sister Rose was a family soul singing group from Dania Beach, Florida. Formed in 1970, it was composed of siblings Carter, Eddie, and Rose Cornelius. Their hit "Treat Her Like a Lady" became a big success in the American R&B and pop charts reaching the US R&B Top 20 and the Billboard Hot 100 in 1971. Known as one of the most popular songs of 1971, the record was awarded a gold disc for one million sales. Recently you may have heard it used during the opening credits of the movie Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy. August 2024 Trivia Hints!
This month is FLASH BACK month! We are re-capping questions and songs from the last Two Years that Pinky & the Brain Trivia have been hosting! So let’s take a moment and learn something new about our ability to remember!

Discovered by psychologists in the 1950s, it is said that the average brain can only hold about seven items at once in its short term memory, but if you compile ideas into a single “folder” you are able to remember more at once. For instance, the Orlando area codes are made up of three numbers, but our memories have compiled them into one single idea: 407. 321. 689. Thus, taking up less mental space! It is also said to help prevent dementia, certain brain games like crossword puzzles, sudoku, and trivia are spectacular at boosting the brain’s health! In people with ADHD, their memory may not be as strong as someone without. People with ADHD often have difficulty remembering instructions in order to finish a task and may have a “disorganized” information storing system - which can make it difficult to easily find information already stored in the brain! Good brain health vitamins like Omega 3 and Ginkgo have the ability to naturally help us get our memories back in shape! But always consult your doctor first if you plan on taking any vitamins. It’s amazing what that little mushy blob in our skulls can do!

July 2024 Name That Tune Hint no.2

“Gimmie Little Sign” may be one of those songs you feel like you know, but you’re not quite sure. Originally written and performed by Brenton Wood, “Gimmie Little Sign” hit the Top 10 Charts in 1967. But the song had much more in its future. Renamed and covered by Syl Johnson, The Sattalites, Peter Andre, Danielle Brisebois, and UB40, the song traveled through to the late 90s making music charts around the world. July 2024 Name That Tune Hint no.1

In 1982 the band Musical Youth released their first album featuring the hit “Pass the Dutchie”. The song, originally about poverty and passing a cooking pot among friends, quickly became a favorite tune in the ‘smoking community’ causing the word “dutchie” to become a common term for ‘the devils lettuce’. Now a fun tune heard in movies such as Scooby Doo, The Wedding Singer, and Stranger Things, “Pass the Dutchie” has become a cult-classic favorite. July 2024 Trivia Hints!

July 4th is not only celebrated as America’s Independence from Great Britain, but some other really cool stuff happened on this day as well! July 4th is Alice in Wonderland Day, National Caesar Salad Day, and Sidewalk Egg Frying Day! Barack Obama’s first born daughter Malia, Jersey Shore’s “The Situation”, and Post Malone were all born on the 4th of July! Ozzy and Sharron got married on July 4th, and so did David Beckham and Posh Spice! Also on July 4th the construction of the Erie Canal began, France gifted us with the Statue of Liberty, and Koko the Gorilla, who famously communicated through sign language, was born in San Francisco! What an amazing day!

June 2024 Name That Tune Hint no.2

Of all the backgrounds I’ve looked up, Eric Clapton is one of the most heart-breaking. Born in 1945 as a result of a WWII fling between a young British teenager and a Canadian temporarily stationed in England, Eric Clapton grew up never knowing his father. Knowing only his name, Clapton attempted to find his father when he became an adult, but sadly his father passed away from leukemia. Inspired by this sadness, Clapton wrote the song “My Father’s Eyes” describing how he wished he could have known his father. The song also refers to his own son Conor who died in 1991 at four years old. Click the link below to listen to “My Father’s Eyes” by Eric Clapton.

June 2024 Name That Tune Hint no.1

Banned from being played on radio stations in the UK and Australia due to its trademarked title, “Kodachrome” still became one of the 70s most popular B-side hits. Kodachrome itself was one of the first color films to be successfully mass-marketed by Kodak. Using its name as a reference to old photos, Paul Simon wrote this song. Originally titled “Coming Home”, “Kodachrome” is a look back on life. The idea that sometimes looking at old photos and hearing old songs of your past may get distorted over time from the reality that they once were. June 2024 Trivia Hints!

Did you know that Father’s Day didn’t become an official holiday until 1972? Though they had similar celebrations for fathers in the European Middle Ages, our Father’s Day is thought to have been started in Spokane, Washington at a YMCA. In 1910 Sonora Smart Dodd heard a sermon on Mother’s Day and thought that fathers should have the same holiday. Sonora’s father, William Jackson Smart, was a civil war veteran and by all accounts a wonderful father who single-handedly raised six children. So one June afternoon at her YMCA, Sonora held a celebration for her father, and for all fathers in the town, sparking an annual event. 62 years later, the idea having spread through the US, President Richard Nixon officially signed Father’s Day as a national holiday!

HINT for Name That Tune, May 2024

In winter 1996, David Grohl of the band Foo Fighters was home for Christmas thinking about his new love interest. The lyrics to “Everlong” were inspired by Grohl's ongoing romance with Louise Post of the band Veruca Salt. “That song's about a girl that I'd fallen in love with and it was basically about being connected to someone so much, that not only do you love them physically and spiritually, but when you sing along with them you harmonize perfectly” That winter evening he wrote "Everlong" in 45 minutes laying on the floor in a sleeping bag. LL Cool J said in his autobiography the idea for “Mama Said Knock You Out” came from a discussion with his grandmother. He told his grandmother he felt he wouldn’t survive as a rapper now that gangsta rap was popular and he was being dissed by up-and-coming rappers. LL's grandmother responded, "Oh baby, just knock them out!" She is featured in the closing scene of the music video. TRIVIA HINTS for MAY!

Cinco de Mayo is often confused with Mexican Independence Day. Instead it commemorates a significant battle during the Franco-Mexican War that took place in Puebla. The Mexican Army, considered the underdogs, overtook the French and emerged victorious. Mexican Independence Day, on the other hand, occurred on September 16, 1810—about 50 years earlier. The holiday's official name is El Día de la Batalla de Puebla, which translates to "The Day of the Battle of Puebla". A few weeks after the battle, people in California heard about the valiant efforts of Mexican soldiers. Residents in the state were so excited that they celebrated with parades and partied with drinks, food, and banquets—it was thought to be the first Cinco de Mayo fiesta! Currently, Denver's Cinco de Mayo Festival is one of the largest in the US. An estimated 400,000 people attend over two days to participate in parades, carnival rides, and a taco-eating contest.

Have you heard the word? In 1963 we all learned that the bird is the word. Based on two songs by the Rivingtons (Bird’s The Word and Papa-Oom-Mow-Mow), the American surf-rock band The Trashmen sang to us about “Surfin Bird”. HINTS for Eagles April Trivia!

Did you know that Easter always falls between two specific dates? March 22nd and April 25th. The exact date for each year is determined by the MOON! Easter always falls on the first full moon after the vernal equinox. But why do we color eggs on Easter? According to some historians, the custom of coloring eggs came from Mesopotamia. Early Christians first stained their eggs red to symbolize the blood of Christ. Speaking of colored eggs, did you know that other countries don’t have bunnies delivering their eggs?! In some German towns a Fox delivers treats, in Australia it’s a Bilby, and in Switzerland it’s a Cuckoo bird! Who knew?!

Name That Tune HINT for March 2024:

EPCOT was born in 1982 from Walt Disney’s idea for a better future. EPCOT (Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow) was originally Disney’s concept for a productive future community where people would live, work, and grow together. When opened in 1982 it became the theme park of Life: showcasing sections such as The Land, Spaceship Earth, World Showcase, and Universe of Energy. In 1986 the Imagination pavilion added a special 3D movie featuring the King of Pop, Michael Jackson. Produced by George Lucas, directed by Francis Ford Coppola, and co-starring Angelica Houston as an evil robotic queen, Disney spared no expense for this epic 3D musical sci-fi adventure! Captain EO featured new songs written and performed by Michael Jackson. One of the most popular of these was the positivity-fueled finale song “Another Part of Me'', which was later released as a single off his 1987 BAD album.
