Did you know?! The word February comes from the Latin word Februarius which means “of Februa”. Februa was a Roman festival of spiritual cleansing that took place around February 15th! The month of February was once considered a time of transition & reflection since it was the last month of the year in the Roman calendar up until 450 BC. Now we use February to celebrate LOVE! Not only is February 14th St. Valentine’s Day, but it is also home to many other holidays! National Read to Your Child Day, National Football Hangover Day, and National Ferris Wheel Day are also celebrated on February 14th!

January 2025 Trivia Hints!

National Trivia Day is on January 4th! It's a day to share interesting facts and enjoy learning new information! The origins of National Trivia Day can be traced back to the 1960s, when Columbia University students Ed Goodgold and Dan Carlinsky began trading questions and answers about popular culture. They later created the first quiz bowls where college students were able to battle their wits against other colleges! But the idea of trivia was popular even back in the early 1900s.The first book to be published based on trivia was “Trivialities: Bits of Information of Little Consequence” by British author Logan Pearsall Smith in 1902! Today we use the word “Trivia” to describe an idea that may be useless or of little importance, but the words trivial and trivia can be traced back to the Latin noun “trivium”, meaning "a place where three roads meet." The Latin word was made from tri-, meaning "three," and via meaning "way” or “road." . Now THAT’S a cool piece of TRIVIA!

December 2024 Name That Tune Hint #1

Some may remember the song “Bitter Sweet Symphony” by The Verve from its popularity in the late 1990s. What people may not know is that the song’s catchy intro was actually based on a sample of the Andrew Oldham Orchestra's 1965 orchestral version of the Rolling Stones song "The Last Time"! Just as the tune sounds, the song title “Bitter Sweet Symphony” is a metaphor for the human experience, which is filled with both bitter and sweet notes. The song's lyrics acknowledge the human capacity to adapt, evolve, or wear different masks in the face of life's complexities. Click the link below to listen to The Verve’s “Bitter Sweet Symphony”

December 2024 Trivia Hints!

The holidays are thick with unique traditions! Like in Caracas, Venezuela, residents don’t head to church in cars—but on roller skates! There are actually so many people who participate in this tradition that several city streets are closed on Christmas morning! Did you know, the origin of the “white elephant” gift exchange comes from the King of Siam! This king would give a rare white elephant to courtiers he disliked as punishment. The gift was beautiful, sacred, and very expensive to care for, but the recipient would have to smile and say they loved it! Though also celebrated at the end of the year, Kwanzaa has no relation to Christmas. This African-American holiday celebrates unity by lighting a “Kinara” each night which holds 7 candles indicating Unity, Self-Determination, Community, Cooperative Economics, Purpose, Creativity, and Faith! Cool stuff to know! Enjoy the Holidays!

November 2024 Name That Tune HINT!

Have you ever noticed how certain songs sound alike? Take for instance “Changes in Latitude” by Jimmy Buffett and “Divers Do It Deeper” by David Allan Coe. Both were released around the same time in 1977, and both were written by their respective musicians. Yet both men claim the other stole their sound! It may be a mystery lost to time, so we might as well enjoy both! Click the link below to listen to David Allan Coe’s “Divers Do It Deeper”

Sometimes pretty cool stuff comes from making a mistake! Joe Jonas of DNCE said the title of “Cake by the Ocean” came from a silly mistake while in the studio. According to Jonas, their Swedish producers confused the well known cocktail “S*x on the Beach” with “Cake by the Ocean”! The band thought it was so funny they named a song after it! HINTS for November 2024 Trivia!

We are entering into November and the cool air is upon us. Did you know the word "November" comes from the Latin word “novem”, which means "nine". This is because November was the ninth month in the Roman calendar and only had 29 days. November is known for its two birthstones Topaz & Citrine, and its flowers Chrysanthemum & Peony, all being associated with love, optimism, wealth, and prosperity. November is home to Thanksgiving, Veteran's Day, and Black Friday. It also includes Diwali, the Hindu festival of lights. Diwali is India's biggest and most important holiday of the year. Indians place lights outside their homes to symbolize the inner light that protects from spiritual darkness. So many cool things about November!

HINTS for October 2024 TRIVIA

Wedding season in Florida is upon us! The weather is getting cooler, and people are ready to celebrate love! Did you know some believe the word Honeymoon comes from the 5th-century belief that mead was an aphrodisiac. It was an old custom for the new bride and groom to drink the fermented honey drink the entire first month of their marriage! The well known tradition of the bride wearing a white dress only became common in the US within the last 200 years! Queen Victoria was a popular trendsetter in the 1800s, so when she wore a white dress during her wedding (just like Princess Philippa of England did in 1406) the US loved it and made it into a classic! Another well known wedding tradition comes from Victorian England as a way of bringing luck to the new couple: “Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed, Something Blue” . But did you know there was also “A sixpence in her shoe”? It has largely been forgotten from the saying since the sixpence was last minted in 1967. So get your dancing shoes ready! We’ve got some weddings to attend!

HINT for September 2024 NAME THAT TUNE

In 2023 rapper Paul Russell released a preview to his new song on TikTok and it immediately went viral. The song “Lil Boo Thang” is a cute upbeat jam that takes its backbeat and roots from the 70s funk legends. (For the older generation out there, the term “lil boo thang” refers to a relationship where you are “talking and hanging out” but not quite girlfriend and boyfriend) Click the link below to listen to Paul Russell’s “Lil Boo Thang”
