Jackie Gleason

Jackie Gleason was a fantastic pool player.

On the set of The Hustler legendary pool player Willie Mosconi was brought in to perform the pool shots. That was necessary for Paul Newman but in his iconic role as Minnesota Fats Jackie Gleason performed all of his own shots.

There is a legendary story about how during the 1975 Masters Tournament Gleason took on the top pool shark in Augusta, Georgia and walked away with one hundred dollars.

How good a pool player was Jackie Gleason? While he didn’t have the time to devote to becoming a tournament player Gleason played at the same level as the best pool sharks in any given city. He was as cool under pressure as his portrayal of Minnesota Fats.

How many more promoters will forego WPA sanctioning now that it’s been proven that WPA is not needed to run a successful international event. Hence the 5% fees from the players to the WPA can be kept in the players pockets.
