My fateful first restaurant job was at a Macaroni Grill in Chesterfield, a suburb of St. Louis, when I was 15. I was hired to sing “Happy Birthday” in Italian – opera style. My other job was to be a hostess, which eventually turned to bussing and food running, which turned to expo, which turned to serving... and so on. Thus began my ongoing love affair with both singing for money, and working in the underbelly of the restaurant business. Quieting a room with my voice gave me a sense of power; earning money and forming industry bonds, gave me a taste of freedom.
It also gave me my lifelong bestie, Melissa Cipponeri, who could certainly cook circles around me on this menu, and who also makes me pasta Milano when I’m feeling down. Which is basically true love.
Join me for my final “Taste Test Tuesday” at The Sanctuary Brewery tonight, before we shift gears for a bit! Perfect rainy day food.
