OSCEOLA — For Patricia Mentink, her small town shop means far more to her than just selling flowers. Mentink and her husband Terry were both born and raised in Polk County, so when it came time to find a
place to settle down
with their two children in the early 1970s, Osceola was an easy answer. Not to
mention it was only a few miles from their hometown of Stromsburg. In 1986, a quaint little flower shop called Flowers on the Square opened in downtown Osceola. After the
flower shop started to hit it off in 1987, a position opened, which is when Mentink jumped on board.
“I was always crafty, but I didn’t know much about flowers,” she admitted. She was hired to take care of the business side of things, such as operating the register and taking care of
customers’ orders. Through time, she began to learn more, resulting in more responsibilities.
“I would do bud vases and smaller arrangements, then I started feeling more comfortable to do bigger
things,” she said. I had wonderful teachers...
After working there for 16 years, the opportunity arose in 2003 for her to buy the shop — she didn’t waste
any time. In January 2004, Mentink became the new owner, changing the name to The Flower Cottage. She runs the shop full time by herself, with alot of help from her 4 friends.. They help whenever needed and especially during the holidays and school activities. Once she took over she knew she wanted her shop to feel like her customers were walking into their
grandma’s house. She remembered that her sister had a lot of their grandmother’s antiques in storage. Mentink had a light bulb experience: She was going to decorate around the shop with her grandmother’s
furnishings.
“Every piece has a story,” she said. It’s the kind of shop you would find in a city, just scaled down a bit. Mentink carries everything from candles and picture frames to silk flower arrangements. It truly is a one-stop shop for gifts and home décor.
“I try to have a little bit of everything," she said. "It’s not a big city, so I can’t really focus on things like just
candles or just silk flowers. I can’t do that here. I need a little bit from every category.”
Though she loves testing out her creative side on a daily basis, she admits her customers are her favorite
part.
“They mean a lot to me," she said. "I get to share a lot of special moments with them: a new baby,
birthdays, graduations, weddings, anniversaries, even funerals. I’ve been here for so long, it’s like
everyone is part of my family.”
It's evident hers is that cute little shop on the corner where everyone wanted to stop in and shoot the
breeze while running their daily errands. Customers would pop their head in just to chat with her while she
worked, as if it were a scene from Andy Griffith’s Mayberry.
“You can’t be sad around flowers,” she said. “What I do for my family, I will do for my customers. I’ve been
in this town for so long, the funerals I do were once my customers. I’ve grown up with them. I
am always sad at first but I change my mindset to instead making a loving tribute to their lives. They are
truly a part of my family.”
She attributes her shop’s success to her love for the job. I am lucky to live in small town America.. My Customer's are the most wonderful people.
“It’s good therapy for me to help others, it might just be a 99-cent card, but at least I helped them do
something,” she said. “I love being a part of everyone’s life. It’s such a joy to me ... You have to love it
because it does take a lot of time."When I am not here I spends all my extra time with my family , In Iowa and Colorado. It'’s such an honor to own this store.”
