Two kinds of people will love Wingspan: strategists and bird lovers. This game is fairly complex and involves collecting birds, eggs, and food for birds, in different habitats. The bird cards have real info on hundreds of varieties of birds. Highly recommend.

My hubby and I love to do escape rooms together! We’ve done close to 60 brick and mortar rooms and many of the card/board game variety. The occasion tonight was our 20th anniversary.

I really feel like my mobile rooms are a happy medium between the brick and mortar rooms and flat board game rooms. Mobile rooms are less expensive than brick and mortar rooms, but still have 3 dimensional manipulatives and real locks.

What kinds of escape rooms have you tried?

Pass the Pigs! It’s a classic even young ones can play. This one had no idea she was practicing fine motor and math when she demanded that she keep score. She won, fair and square!

Start off the new year playing games Railroad Inc. is a quick game that is easy to learn and quick to play. Kids can learn it and grow in their strategic planning skills, but adults can continue to hone their skills. The river and forrest expansions add variety. This game can be played alone or with up to as many people as you have boards for. I highly recommend it!
Also, I won. Just saying.

Where it all started... 7 years ago, my son asked me to design an escape room for he and his friends to do for his tenth birthday. I loved creating it and listening to them figure it out. I had to design more and give others a chance to experience them, too.

‘Tis the season for board games! Ok, that’s every season for us. Seriously, though, Project L is a favorite for us. Complete little puzzles with polyominoes to earn points. The rules are simple, but the strategy can be developed. I’d recommend it for families, for sure.

My Island is a legacy game. This means that the game is played in a series of episodes. At the end of each episode, players make alterations to their game boards and earn progress points. If you lose an episode, for example, you might receive some sort of advantage to help you be more competitive in the next episode. We’ve been playing this game all October (I think there are 27 episodes) and David emerged as the ultimate victor. The strategy for each round revolves around placing pieces on your island to meet certain goals. My Island is the sequel to My City, which we also enjoyed.

It’s been so long since we’ve all been home for a game night. Remember the lock down when we got to play games every night? That was a nice silver lining. Oriflamme is a strategy card game. It’s fun as long as no one takes getting assassinated personally.

We discovered this ingenious game yesterday! It helps develop number sense in a whimsical and attainable way. She insisted on playing twice and had no idea about all the connections her little brain was making.

Rome is an investment - $$ and time - but, we all like it. Stake your claim on properties and construct buildings to earn victory points.

Ninja Academy is a fun party game that involves all sorts of creative competitions using little meeples. You might have to balance them on your fingers, flick them at a goal, or guess how many an opponent has hidden in the box… it’s goofy and fun.

Saboteur is a fun game that can be played with even large groups of people. It involves building mine paths, secret alliances, and sabotage.

We played this game for our two most recent family game nights and Lily won both times. It’s a racing and programming game. A cool component is that you plan your moves using a slide puzzle.

On Tour is a really fun roll and write game. You design a music tour for your band with stops all across the country. Bonus: practice with American geography. Also, you can buy extra boards to include more players.

I actually won a game! It doesn’t come easy with my teens and husband. Planet Unknown is a 2-6 player game in which players place polyomino pieces and advance resource trackers, clear meteors, and collect life pods. There’s a lot to keep track of, but it plays quickly. And, I like it because players do their best with what they have rather than attacking opponents.

In the interest of problem solving….
Problem: My family enjoys dishes requiring a long list of spices to measure (this one has 10!)
Solution: When I make a batch, I measure 4 batches of spices into cups and save 3 in little zip locks for future busy nights.
