How I Became A Self-Taught Sugar Artist

My name is Lisa and I am a baking addict! If I'm not baking, then I am cooking. Let's just say that if you walked into my home right now you would probably find me in the kitchen!

I'm not sure if you would call it a “journey”, but my cookie crafting essentially began when one day I was lazily watching YouTube videos of sped up cookie decorating and surfing good ol’ Pinterest and checking out boho style decorated cookie designs. Basically I thought, “that looks fun, I want to try doing that!”. Pretty much within a couple hours I was leaned over my KitchenAid mixer happily mixing up some sugar cookie dough and soon enough, royal icing glaze!

The first batch of cookies I decorated were shared on Facebook right before Valentine's Day. The cookies were mediocre, amateur at best but that didn't stop one of my friends from sending me a message applauding my work and requesting I do cookies for their future daughter-in-laws baby shower. Part of me was excited and the other half was thinking of a thousand reasons why I wouldn't be able to make personalized cookies for her... then I had this moment of clarity where I realized we all start somewhere and maybe there was an actual chance I could be good at this cookie decorating thing! This could be something fun that I could do while simultaneously raising three young daughters at home.

Warily I agreed to make two dozen baby shower cookies. After lots of trial and error and loads of practice (I’m talking baking and decorating EVERY SINGLE DAY for about a month), I proudly delivered my first order and of course my client-friend loved and appreciated each individually hand decorated and cellophane sealed treat!
