the story
One Thanksgiving Ottawa, IL resident Katie Troccoli sat in the living room with her family and drew up plans to create a nonprofit, Here and Again, Inc. which would contain provisions for a broad array of community-enriching creative start ups. Community radio station WRWO 94.5 FM is the first project of Here and Again, Inc. Before WRWO was even officially launched, various events were hosted in the building where the station was being built, Wallace Hall. One such meeting was a monthly songwriter night where local songwriters would gather and share songs with each other, giving and receiving input - often on songs that hadn’t been played in a while or were still in their early stages.
Many of these Illinois Valley songwriters regularly frequented many of the open mics hosted by venues in the area at one time or another. They are often good opportunities to meet other local musicians, work out the kinks in songs, and connect with others around music on a weeknight.
On one particular open mic night, a songwriter from Ottawa brought a fellow songwriter from Chicago, got in conversation with a former host of the songwriter night at Wallace Hall and the conception for song + story was born. Their brainchild was a listening room atmosphere and a multi-act bill featuring a mix of local, regional, and nationally touring artists whom Illinois Valley songwriters had come to know and respect in their history of playing gigs.
This would provide an opportunity for Illinois Valley songwriters and their peers from other places to connect, and Illinois Valley residents to hear some fine and fresh original music in their very own community for a price they can afford - by donation.
