Our Story

Our mission: JCCCโ€™s Carlsen Center will present professional, diverse, high-quality performing artists; serve as a comprehensive arts education resource; and lead, partner and collaborate on campus, in the community and across the country.

The founders of Johnson County Community College (JCCC) conceived a world-class performing arts center in Johnson County, Kansas, and in 1990, that dream was realized. The Center's growth has paralleled that of the county, expanding from 50 events the first season to 175 each year. Events include the Carlsen Center Series, a diverse array of world-renowned, professional performers in dance, music, theatre, comedy (30%); Academic programs โ€“ graduations, recitals, speakers and similar (40%); and events presented by groups from the community that rent the space (30%). Rentals clients have included Junior Leagues of Johnson & Wyandotte Counties, Youth Symphony of Kansas City, American Youth Ballet, KC Superstar, Kansas City Chinese America Association and other professional and community organizations. The Carlsen Center attracts more than 70,000 people annually, 20,000+ of whom attend the Series. The center has hosted over 2.5 Million people in its history.
