Itโ€™s -we are excited to have Miami String Quartet with us this summer! ๐ŸŽป

We are thrilled to introduce the Miami String Quartet as the Resident Quartet for the Heartland Chamber Music Festival 2024!

Hailed by The New York Times for possessing "all the qualities one desires in a quartet: a lush and finely-tuned sound, an extensive range of musical colors, a true sense of interpretive unity, and seemingly boundless energy," the Miami String Quartet has firmly secured its position as one of the most esteemed quartets in the United States. With a legacy spanning more than three decades, their remarkable variety in repertoire, grace in live performances, acute ensemble coordination, and flawless musicality has made the Miami String Quartet one of the most sought-after quartets in chamber music today.

Come join us and letโ€™s make music together this summer!

Join us in honoring Juneteenth by exploring the powerful narratives of Black American life with NORTH The Musical and the thought-provoking exhibit 'Sorting Out Race' at JCCC.

North The Musical information can be found at https://www.norththemusical.com
We loved hosting and sharing this new piece with our audiences last season.

The โ€˜Sorting Out Raceโ€™ travelling exhibit from the Kauffman Museum at Bethel College, delves into the complexities of racial imagery in donations to thrift stores. Don't miss this chance for reflection and education. Visit the CoLab on the Johnson County Community College campus before July 26 to experience it for yourself.

Join the Midwest Trust Center and Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art for the 2024 Light Up the Lawn Concert Series featuring some of the best live music Kansas City has to offer. Bring your blankets, lawn chairs, and picnic baskets (no alcohol) for these free, fun events! The Freedom Affair is a female-fronted soul powerhouse inspired by the traditions of the genreโ€™s past with an enduring message that looks toward the future. Three dynamic, awe-inspiring singers โ€“ Seyko Groves, Paula Saunders, and Shon Ruffin โ€“ share lead and background vocals, blending refined harmonies while backed by an airtight band that meets every musical moment with taste, precision, and a deep pocket.

Soul-stirring and transformative; moving audiences physically and emotionally.
Riding the success of their debut album, โ€œFreedom is Love,โ€ the band has reemerged with an impressive arsenal of new music conceived in the wake of the Covid pandemic. A series of four stand-alone singles recorded straight to tape in their Kansas City studio will roll out over 2024 to prelude their sophomore album releasing in early 2025. Each single encapsulating a different sound and theme, the series highlights the bandโ€™s range and proficient songwriting prowess: a perfect course between their first and second full-length offerings that reintroduces fans to the majesty that this collective of artists produces.

The magic The Freedom Affair captures in the studio is exponentially magnified live, in person. Crowds rave about the fireworks this group brings to the stage. The band is poised to continue bringing their brand of inspired soul to new crowds across the world.

Free; no reservations required.

Our Story

Our mission: JCCCโ€™s Carlsen Center will present professional, diverse, high-quality performing artists; serve as a comprehensive arts education resource; and lead, partner and collaborate on campus, in the community and across the country.

The founders of Johnson County Community College (JCCC) conceived a world-class performing arts center in Johnson County, Kansas, and in 1990, that dream was realized. The Center's growth has paralleled that of the county, expanding from 50 events the first season to 175 each year. Events include the Carlsen Center Series, a diverse array of world-renowned, professional performers in dance, music, theatre, comedy (30%); Academic programs โ€“ graduations, recitals, speakers and similar (40%); and events presented by groups from the community that rent the space (30%). Rentals clients have included Junior Leagues of Johnson & Wyandotte Counties, Youth Symphony of Kansas City, American Youth Ballet, KC Superstar, Kansas City Chinese America Association and other professional and community organizations. The Carlsen Center attracts more than 70,000 people annually, 20,000+ of whom attend the Series. The center has hosted over 2.5 Million people in its history.
