Thank you to for inviting OPAC to be a part of the Parade of Frights festivities yesterday. We had an eerily good time creating spooky scenes and interactive activities for ghouls young and old! Cosplay on Display: IchigoCon 2024
The worlds of gaming and anime joyfully collided on Sept. 14 with IchigoCon 2024. The second annual event, which debuted in 2023 at the Oxnard Performing Arts Center, moved to Studio Channel Islands this year. Fans of all ages descended on the art center in Old Town Camarillo, many dressed as their favorite comic book, television and video game characters. Some were undoubtedly competing in the cosplay contest hosted by SuncakeMooncake. Attendees also had the opportunity to meet voice actors, attend workshops, enjoy live music by Asayoru Cafe and Togen Daiko and shop the marketplace featuring more than 50 anime-themed vendors and artists. There was even a silent disco and karaoke.

Renowned photographer Bob DeBris — whose Mexican wrestling photos were on display at the Mexican Consulate in Oxnard all summer — had a free photo booth at the event, where dozens of cosplayers had the chance to show off their inventive garb.

Thanks to everyone who attended OPAC's September Family Art Night on Friday! We had a blast with arts and crafts projects, like African masks and Hawaiian leis, inspired by cultures throughout the globe. We'll see you on October 18th for the next one!

INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITY!

Project Description:
Los Angeles artists Renée Fox and David Russell from Mobile Mural Lab (who are also professors at Otis College of Arts & Design) will be producing an original hand painted mural for the newly renovated Ray D. Prueter Public Library in Port Hueneme this Fall. The artists will select one youth intern to learn technique and assist in producing the mural.

Who: ages 18-22, residents of Port Hueneme, has a passion for the arts (mural painting)
Where: Ray D. Prueter Public Library - Port Hueneme, CA
What: Mural Painting Internship
When: Fall 2024

How to Apply-
Please create a short video of yourself responding to the following questions:

IchigoCon 2024 is a wrap! Thank you to all of our attendees, performers, voice actors, sponsors, volunteers, staffers, and champions who helped make this incredibly special event possible. We 🍓 you!

Before summer wraps up, we wanted to spotlight one of the camps we presented, our Teen "Solar Art" session with Oxnard's own Tomas Hernandez. ☀️

Together, students dived into Chicano history, Mexican-Aztec symbolism, and harnessed the power of the sun to make Cyanotype prints and build their own art-infused solar panels!

We couldn't think of a better instructor. Tomas earned his Master's in Chicano/a Studies at California State University, Northridge and wrote his thesis on "Regenerative Xicanx Art: Photovoltaic Productions for Community Settings", which investigated the praxis of designing, producing, and understanding how photovoltaic (PV) or solar panel-based artwork can transfigure public spaces by providing free energy. 🫶What an incredible mentor for our youth.

It's almost back to school time! Make sure to schedule creative time for your teen. Art-making is not only fun, but it reduces stress, helps our mental health, and is linked to improved academic performance.

Our next OPAC Teen Art Program: Handbuilt Ceramics w/ Corey is one of our most popular classes and instructors! Space is limited. The class runs for 6 weeks on Saturdays from 9 am to 12 noon from Sept. 21 - Oct. 26.

Admission is free thanks to our amazing sponsors, but donations are really appreciated as they help our nonprofit continue to offer more wonderful programming for our community.

*NEW CLASS ALERT*

This fall, we're teaming up with Robles Children's Choir for a free 7-week class called "CORO Children's Chorus." Classes will be held on Saturdays from 1-2 pm at and will end in a performance for family and friends on Dec. 7!

This fun and engaging choir class is for all children in Grades 1-8 who like to sing! No previous experience is needed to join. Free to participate. Advanced registration required. Class is limited to 20 students.
